Looking for recipes for this Beartooth bullet using Lil'Gun. Does anyone have any info on this combo? Will be used in my 5.5" Redhawk as an Alaskan fishing companion. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Hi guys, just tuned in lately. The Redhawk is brute strong, stronger than any loads I enjoy shooting. Almost as strong as the 5 shot custom revolvers. We are kinda 45 nuts here and shoot and hunt with nothing, (almost nothin

Hi guys, just tuned in lately. The Redhawk is brute strong, stronger than any loads I enjoy shooting. Almost as strong as the 5 shot custom revolvers. We are kinda 45 nuts here and shoot and hunt with nothing, (almost nothing) but 45 lever guns and revolvers. I stay in touch with John Linebaugh, so I may ask him his ideas, but we have used a load of H110 at 25 grains under a 310gr Keith bullet in the standard Bisley Rugers for about 1300 fps in the 4 5/8 barrell, for years.
The last couple of years we have changed to reduced velocity and heavier bullets. One of our favorite, heavy loads is 19gr H110 and a 400 gr Keith bullet at about 1100 fps. Careful not to compress H110,with these long bullets, as pressures get violent. This load penitrates extremely well and is much nicer to shoot than the super fast loads. It has been proven, with testing by ourselves and others, that the moderate velocity loads will penetrate better than the fast loads. You can walk in water but you can't run very fast in water??? http://www.garrettcartridges.com/penetration.asp As an example our 310 Keith load from the revolver at 1300 fps, compared to the same load from the rifle at almost 1800 fps, the revolver will penetrate almost a foot farther in wet newpaper that the faster load from the rifle. The 400 grain bullet load will also shoot flatter and quicker at long range (300 to 800 yards) than the lighter bullet at higher velocity. More inertia, more carry?? If these big bullets will not shoot at long range, a bunch of buffalo died in vain. All this to say IMHO the heavy bullet load at a 1000 to 1250 fps will give crunching penetration, and a load that is reasonably mild mannered, certainly shootable with one hand, and would be my choice in my Redhawk if I were to encounter something with big teeth, on the trail, and had no choice but to shoot.
In lots of trials of penetration testing, the all time champ is a 50 x 3 1/4 Sharps with 735 gr flat point lead bullet and black powder at 1440 fps. 8 feet of wet newpaper and beef bones will not stop this load. And we have tried nearly every"elephant rifle" out there. The 540 gr 45-70 load at 1550 fps still stands in second place.
We played the velocity game for years when we were younger, sure kept the gun and amo companies happy. Sure wish I had those dollars back, I could sure buy some nice 45s. The younger boys here shoot 260 grain keith loads at 950 fps( our plinking loads) and deer and antelope size game just get sick and fall over.
Just some thought from our experience.
old school thoughts?

I shoot a 300 grain FN-PB from Montana Bullet Supply with 23.5 grains of H110 through an old model Vaquero... its enough recoil for me. Not sure of the speed, but it blows right through 3/16ths cold rolled steel plate at 50 paces with authoritah. :)

John Kort and Marlin Collector have looked at heavy bullets in the .45 Colt lever rifles and the data should tranffer across for you.

Check out other bullet weights in the drop down list. It seems using the same bullet, H110 or W296 seem to give a little bit higher velocity at the same pressures as Lil'Gun. We're talking only 50 FPS, but if your looking for it all....
