Hi,
I wrote Lyman about doing a run of the 3589/358009 280 grain RNGC 2-cavity moulds, and their response was that they would pass it on to their marketing dept.

Wonder if some of y'all would please take the time to write Lyman.

Thanks!

Tycer, I've been pleading with Lyman to do same for the last couple of years. Hopefully they will take notice, after so many replies. These babies are going for well over $100.00 on Ebay. Maybe after so many lead bricks to the the head, Lyman will wake up and give its customers what it wants.

This is a good .35 Whelen bullet. It will penetrate far further than you might believe.

How badly do you want it?

Ballisti-Cast will add a mould to their line for the cost of the mould you buy plus $200. Only the first buyer has to pay the $200 set up cost. Could buy a two, four or six cavity mould.

Hoch would undoubtedly just copy it for the cost of a mould. No big deal.

Both companies make much better moulds than Lyman.

I've seen this come up before, specifically for this mould. You're better off going custom, pay a few bucks more, and get a mould that is far superior to anything Lyman puts out. In other words, don't hold your breath for Lyman, for anything. sundog

If you dont mind aluminum Lee will make any mold for you at a lot lower set up fee than 200 bucks.

I've heard of this bullet, but never seen it. Does anyone have a tech drawing of it? I have a Whelen that is just dying for a really nice heavy cast bullet. I've also heard that the Lee 6 cavity molds are really nicely done. They would most likely be the most affordable, if we can get 20 to 30 folks that want them.

Here's a pic of a knockoff done several years ago. It is actually a better boolit than the original Lyman. In a 14 twist Whelen it is the bee's knees! sundog

The tech drawing is attached to the bottom of the third post above.

Lyman, of course, was originally Ideal.

Ideal made moulds for years. Eventually, however, they started numbering them. The Ideal naming scheme contains the as cast diameter first, in this case 358, followed by the number of the bullet. This was Ideal bullet #9, i.e. the ninth bullet under their new numbering scheme. Eventually Lyman made all these numbers six digits long so 3589 became 358009. All this is explained in one of the Lyman reloading manuals somewhere. I wrote that article for Lyman but I don't remember where they printed it.

Ken,

"A Historical Look at Lyman Cast Bullet Design" Lyman 46th Edition page 148.

Between you and John Kort I might learn something about the Ideal Company.

John has me all excited re-reading about Dr. Hudson and the early powders, gas checks and Arsenal loading tools. Great fun.

OK, resurecting an old post here. Has anyone here had a similar mold made by a custom mold maker? Or any other heavy 35 cal rifle bullet? The link above is too old to work evidently, so I didn't find any info there.

You can find a picture of the 3589/358009 at CastPics. Goto http://www.castpics.net/, select Moulds on the left side, then Lyman, then 357511-35887.

Decades ago Lyman dropped most of their mould block line. I don't think that this particular bullet was one of those dropped but... At the same time NEI started up. Walt, NEI's owner, told me that Lyman made his company by discontinuing so many popular moulds. Walt made cherries for virtually all the dropped Lyman bullets. So my guess is that if you go over the NEI on line catalogue carefully you'll find this bullet. I haven't tried doing that but it would be worth a shot.

If you buy an NEI mould, I'd recommend getting their steel version. They last better than their aluminum blocks.

After Walt died I haven't done business with the current owners, Walt's daughter I think. So I don't know how well they are making moulds. But Walt's work was excellent.

For those looking for the original Lyman version of this bullet, 358009, we make them on a special order basis. They weigh right at 280 grains with our alloy, lubed and gas-checked. They are about the finest bullet going for a .35 Whelen in our experience when a heavy bullet is called upon. Give a call, and we'll get you set up. I had an older Ideal numbered mold, but it was somewhat past it's prime, but managed to come upon one that had never been used in an estate auction, and it throws a super quality bullet.

God bless,

I bought a new NEI mould within the past month or so and am well pleased with it.

Marshall, thanks for the offer to make some of the 358009 35 Whelen bullets. I may have to buy some from you if I can't find a suitable mold. I have a few of these on hand to try in my rifle before i need to buy any.

PM sent.
