I just ordered some 300g WFN-GC's from Beartooth and was looking for a couple of starter loads. I'm loading them for a 629 "Stealth Hunter" with a 7.5" Mag-na-ported barrel.

I spoke to Marshal on the phone and he recommended 11.5g of #5 for a good light load slightly over 1100 fps. I'm also looking for a max H110 load and a mid-range (1200-1300 fps) load.

I was looking at Accurates's #9 load data for a 300g (SSK) and they recommend 16.6-18.5g for 1175-1320 fps. Sounds like it might be what I'm looking for in a mid-range load.

What's the recommended H110 load for this bullet?

Also, anyone have a mid-range (1200-1300) load they like?

I just wanted to try a broad range of loads and see what shoots the best in this gun. I'll be hunting whitetails and the ocasional hog with it, shots under 100yds.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Jimmy

300 grain loads.... pretty simple. Start with this:

http://www.hodgdon.com/data/pistol/44remmag.php

Work up from Hodgdon's recommendations, BUT rather than going by exactly the grain weights, keep an eye on the chrono. When you hit the same velocities as the jacketed loads (or the accuracy you desire, whichever comes first), quit.

Odds are, you'll have to run a bit over the posted loads for jacketed bullets, due to the WFNGCs not eating up as much case volume.

I just finished reading Marshall's Tech Note "Handgun Hunting Loads, A Critical View" and have to say I am now one of his faithfull followers.

The 1100 fps load he gave me on the phone today looks like the perfect load for this gun and it's intended application. I've got a Reflex II sight on it that's got a 12moa triangle dot. If I zero it at 50 yds on the peak of the triangle, I should be able to center the triangle on target at 100 yds and be right on.

Thanks for the help (Mike and Marshall). This is a great forum, and I'm sure you'll be seeing me around here alot. When the bullets get here and I get some time at the range, I'll update my progress.

The classic load for the 300 grain cast is 21.5 grains of H110 or 296. Gives 1200 fps in a 5 1/2 inch barrel. Average accuracy runs about 2 to 3 inch groups at 50 yards. Tremendous penetration.
