My dad is less than a week away from finishing the custom 8x57 he is building me, and I was going to order some ammo off the internet. I'm was going to buy Sellier & Bellot, and then I came across Wolf Gold. Both are 196gr bullets at 2400-2500fps, but I don't know if there are big differences in the bullets or what. Any experiences with these and suggestions on which to get?

Go w/ either. Pretty accurate stuff from most 8mm Mausers. Hand loads are the way to go. Hornady ammo is made by Graf w/ hornady bullets, very good but pricey.

Here is a cheaper source, lots of guys like Prvi! I believe they make the Wolf! http://www.ammunitionstore.com/

I used to use ammo from a German company called Metalwerken, 196gr. Sp., but don't know who would carry it in the US. You'll have to ask around to find it. I would prefer something from Norma or Lapua even though it's probably a bit more expensive. Just one mans opinion. Best wishes.

S&B is the most consistent & accurate out off the shelf ammo I have found. In the 8x57 the 196gr SPCE performs excellently. Norma is also very good but comes with a much higher price tag too. Limited experience with Privi but it seems to be okay but is not as accurate as S&B and dirtier burning too. Performance of domestic ammo in the 8x57 is just plain sorry. I have not tried the Wolf Gold yet.

Reloading is definitely the way to go but if you need to get shooting now and want a good hunting round, my vote goes for the S&B 196gr SPCE. Privi is good to get if you want cheaper practice ammo and save the brass for reloading at a later date.

I have used Sellier & Bellot for years in my 8x57 JR (rimmed 8mm Mauser). I have also used RWS which cost 3 times as much. I cannot tell the difference in accuracy from a box that cost $30 and one that cost $90 per box.

Watch out for older ammo. There is a lot out there that still have corrosive/mercuric primers which are very corrosive. I have several boxes of Seller & Ballot with these primers. It is still fine ammo, you just have to run boiling water through the bore after using and take other precautions to make sure you clean everything very throughly otherwise you will have some serious problems.

You can get 8x75 JS (rimless 8mm Mauser) in US brands such as Remington and Winchester now also:
