Hello
After over 50 years of "almosts",I finally got a case stuck in my sizing die;really stuck.
As you might expect,I was doing something rather Dumb.I had 6 odd cases to size, and some time to kill, while waiting to go out for breakfast, with the Wife.
The first 3 went through the die quite easily,so,being kinda cheap,I put less lube on the 4th one.Presto!stuck case.
I drilled and tapped the case, and put in a 5/16 stainless steel bolt.
Would there be a preference to either drive the bolt out wwith a hammer and punch;or rigging the bolt with washers and pull it out with my reloading tool?
Also, which is better;Kroil oil dropped in o WD 40 spray?
Thanks
Gismo

Put you die, stuck case and all in the freezer for about 30 minutes, then knock out the old case using the bolt you installed. The freezer will let the brass shrink a little.
Pull it with washers. It's the only way.

I tried freezing in the "deep freeze"section of the freezer overnight.
I could not drive the case out;but i'm not too strong.
I got a longer bolt and screwed the case out.
It was a throughly bad experience for me,but the die is just fine.

Frank - a little Imperial Sizing Die Wax goes a long way! My stuck case remover has been retired since I began using it! :D

Once FL resized 250 once-fired .308 WIN cases in one loading session that I bought on ebay. Learned the hard way that when the ram won't advance with normal force, not to "push" it further. Stop, retract the shell and re-lube it lightly in the area that won't size and try again. Have had no problems if I can remember my own procedure and not to get frustrated and "lean" on the press handle. Still keep a RCBS stuck case remover kit on hand as a backup. Hope I never have to use it again. :D

On your question about Kroil and WD40. I prefer Kroil, That stuff will penetrate any opening no mater how small. I haven't been using it very long, but I'm really impressed. Best wishes.

I've had a rash of these with Hornady 450 Marlin cases. The rim on the cartridge is thin and tears off at the shellholder at the first sign of resistance.

Frank,
The RCBS stuck case removing set works perfectly.
Just don't ask how I know. But it's the same way I know how "dumb" some acts can make you feel.

I never did get my stuck case loose. I sent if off to Redding and they sent me a new body die and shellholder which was nice of them. I've since purchased an RCBS stuck case removal kit. I rarely use a full length sizing die and forgot the Redding body die was a full length sizer that doesn't touch the neck but needs lube for the case walls to enter and extract from the die. What a way to jog the old memory. Best wishes.

I've stuck one, just took it out to my shop and disassembled the die and drove the case out with a punch. Worked just fine, but I learned my lesson about being stingy with case lube! Now I mostly use Lee collet sizing die's and don't lube at all.

The RCBS stuck case remover is one of those tools you hope you;ll never have to use but when you need it you wonder what you ever did without it!
I stuck two 30-30 cases in a set of used RCBS dies I picked up cheap! I found out why! I actualy broke out two stations on the shell holder of my Dillon RL550B! I sent Dillon the broken shell plate with both of the bad cases (one Winchester and one Remington) and receved a new one no questions asked! I also bought a NEW set of RCBS dies, no problems since.

I now have an RCBS stuck case removal kit. Since I only seem to get a case stuck in the die about every 20 years or so I'm quite sure that by the next time I'll have forgotten where in heck I've put the kit.. I found out this time around that you can also bend the shell holder so you might be wise to get a new one while you're at it. Best wishes.
