I've search around the various forums and I almost never see the Savage Model 99 in .308 caliber referred to at all. Does no one use or reload for it anymore? I've never owned one, and I wouldn't mind getting one, but I'm curious why they are so invisible? Is it just because they are an older model?

Check out this post. They talk about the .308's there.

I had my heart set on one a while back, then discovered that nearly no one sells the one's they own! Too bad. Seems like the perfect lever. My son's ready to deer hunt, and likes my BLR, but no way am I giving him one of those with the open hammer to manipulate. Bad things will happen.

You seem to be absolutely correct because I'm surely not finding very many out there for sale. And they made millions of them.

Gents,
Reckon those with are hanging on, like with Colt's and what will likely happen with Winchesters. I have seen them on Guns America and such, and still here and there, but I can't tell you the last time I saw a 99 for sale in a gun store that was worth buying.
I had been considering letting my 300 go away, but my daughter has gotten ahold of it, and has managed to make it group. I reckon it'll be around for awhile yet.
Good luck, I really like the guns, they do a good job, and are pretty nice to look at once a fellow gets used to them.
