My wife told her uncle I was wanting a levergun and he mentioned he had one and would be willing to sell it since he doesn't hunt anymore. He says its a Winchester 30-06. I was wondering if they made a lever gun in a 30-06 or if he got confused. I wasn't sure if Winchester carried the BLR or something along those lines, or if he was thinking 30-30, or Browning.
Thanks.

Probably an 1895.... should be an interesting piece.
It could also be a browning repro of the 1895. If it's original, then certainly a collector's item, so treat it kindly.

Just a word of warning, the 1895's are heavy as ****, but they sure look pretty and Teddy R. liked his 1895 in 405. Les

If its a Winchester and its really a .30-06, its an 1895. Treat it gently and enjoy. They handle far better than they appear that they would. Since sorting out the sights and loads five years ago, my Browning 1895 became my number one carry piece. BOL

What the other guys said. If it is an orginal 1895 it might be chambered in 30-03. The case is something like 1/10,000 of an inch longer than a 30-06. The 30-06 can be shot in the 30-03 but not the other way around. IF it is a 30-03 it will say 30 GOV. I'm no big Winchester fan, but the 1895 is a nice rifle. I have a 1895 Carbine in 30-03 and it has killed it's share of deer, I love to hunt with that rifle.

HMMM???
My brothers Winchester 1895 (1905)chambered in 30-03 (30 GOV, 30 ARMY is 30-40 Krag) is a LIGHT WEIGHT it kicks like a freakin MULE! damb near has hard as my M77 in 338 Win Mag!, my uncle has one chambered in 405 Win, never shot it, don't think I want to?
The 30-03 case is .070" longer in the NECK only from the shoulder down the case is the same, as for shooting 30-03 cases in a 30-06 GOOD LUCK! we searched high and low to find some to reload for my brothers gun, NONE were to be found!

if it is a original win. 1895 DO NOT fire modern ammo in it early 06 ammo was no better than todays 300 savage. you could wide up with exess head space or ruptred case
I have a "95 SRC in .30 Gov't '06 that has had lots of mil-surp ammo run through it, without any problems. I haven't fired any new, off the shelf ammo in it, though. I prefer my loads much better. 47 grs of IMR 4895, with the Sierra 150 BT makes for a sweet deer load, and is certainly easy on the circa 1925 Winchester.

It possibly MIGHT be a long action Browning BLR depending on how long your uncle has owned the gun, but I'm guessing also a 1895 Winchester or a Browning clone by Miroku.

In case y'all haven't been following a few of my other posts. I went and visited my uncle-in-law and he didn't have any leverguns, but he did have a Winchester 70 Post-64.
So alas I am still levergunless, my little daisy BB-gun, doesn't count even though I shoot that thing more than any other guns I own. Thanks for y'all's help.
