Some states allow it for deer hunting, but remember that it is in the same class as the 32-20, requiring very good marksmanship at close ranges. Deer have been taken with the .22 short, but it is not recommended. I took my first Mule Deer at 14 years of age with a .25-20, and also got one of the worst dressing downs I ever had by my grandfather. Most States have a legal limit on firearm caliber, and some have a requirement for bullet energy, so make sure to check all state laws before entertaining thoughts of hunting anything but small game with the M-1 .30 Caliber Carbine.

No doubt it will work under ideal conditions...but are darned few hunters that are willing to pass up what would have been easy shots on deer for a larger caliber. While it is legal in some states (including my home state...which also alows .22Hornet) , it's not a great idea....doesn't have the bullet weight or the velocity.
Know it works. Family friend was high up in a local la enforcement agency and wuld keep an M2 in teh trunk of his car. Would often have to put down car-struck game (and the occasional steer)...but that certainly isn't "hunting".
Well...........it WILL work. Just not as effective for good bullet placement and impact energy as other cartridges.
I personally know you can take a deer with one, as I knocked one down in Korea, oh so many years ago! 'Course the carbine was an M2 set on full auto with a 15 round magazine and the deer was approx. 50 yds out. Must have had the same effect as being hit with a 12 ga. 00 Buck round. Pattern looked about the same!
Unless up close and personal, using a fast expanding bullet and getting good bullet placement, think I'd opt for another cartridge for deer hunting.

Difficult to find soft points in factory ammo.... that would seem to be the greatest hurdle, if it were legal where you are, and practial with the conditions.
Like kdub says... when you're hungry, anything can be made to work! :D
It would be legal in Texas, by the way... as would any centerfire.

IF your going to use it,, maybe the new Corbon- DPX ammo would be the way to go

Didn't have the M1 Carbine until WWII, as you well know, AND, I was way too young for that one! (Smartarse!!!!) :p

That was Ucle Red's way of doing it...M2, the legal ability to own it, the responsibility to use to, so he tended to rock-an-roll on the downed critter. Kind hearted man, believe he just didn't want to have to work up the need to pull the trigger more than once.
But like mentioned, that's not hunting....that's mercy killing.
Being legal to use and being wise to use...even though the rules would let me deer hunt with a .22hornet, I have no intention of doing so. Suggest the 30carbine would be better placed in teh same catagroy.

I used to have one back in the 70's but it had been Jimmy Jacked around using a chrome barrel and some other add on's not stock.
It would make a good rat killing tool for the barn over bait! I know I would never attempt to hunt a deer with one. The were made to kill a human at close range or should I say wound the enemy. I'd opt for the 45acp before using the M-1 .30 caliber carbine.

Due to impaired ability,I will probably hunt with th GI Carbine, again this upcoming Season. It is definately a close range gun.The bullet makers saythat the 110 grain bullet will open up at 1800 FPS.That's about 50 yards. The 100 grain Hornady is probably a better choice.
Please tell me more about the Corbon-DPX ammo.

Kargman...while I haven't met you, can figure out what kind of hunter you ae...you'd do just as well with the 30carbine as you'd do with a .300Win Mag simply becasue I'd rust you to shoot when you have a sure-shot and pass when you don't.
One of the ways i try to evaluate a semi-auto (of any caliber) owner's shooting plans is to ask:
"IF you lost the magazine and could only shoot it as a single shot, would it still seem like a good idea to take it out deer hunting?"

Close up the Carbine will handle deer. The Remington ammo is for varmits so dont use it on deer. Pick one of the softpoints. The Carbine has about the same energy as a 240 grain 44 mag factory load. Just put it carefully into the right spot.

For me,the answer is a definate NO.I have tried and failed to operate the actions of my Krag and Win "94.I have no problem operating the actions of bolt guns on the bench. The auto is my only option;Garand 30'06 and Mossberg 12 gauge,as well as the 30 Carbine.
I now offer you a BIG thank you.Because my arms and hands are getting better, your post prompted me to try the action of my win "94,from the offhand position.I done DID it!
A little cumbersome, but I'll pactice it regularly, and maybe will use it this upcoming Season.

Kragman, another option would be a Ruger Mini 30. Better balistics than the .30 Carbine, and almost as good as a good .30-30. It would also have less recoil than the .30-30, as well as giving you a Semi-auto that is light weight,

Kragman-
Have no doubt you can hunt deer with that M1...you've been around awhile and know when to shoot and when not to. I cannot sign off on the .30carbine for universal use, but know that hunter experience plays a much larger role in deer hunting than paper ballistics. Difference being that you can pass on a shot that's not a sure thing...won't blaze away at the hind end of a deer.
As for the '94, it's the off hand controling the fore arm and pulling back to keep that butt stock on your shoulder that seems odd. Those crecent butt plates had a use but can make a flat butt plate work so long as it doesn't slip.

When I read about the development of the M1 Carbine it was to have been a 2300fps round as I remember.Changes were made to expedite the build out which included the ammo reduced in velocity . The M2 carbine assigned to me while in the USAF wasn't a target rifle more like spray and pray accuracy. The Speer 13 the Reloading Manual says it shouldn't be used to hunt anything larger than a coyote!I agree.

THe Cor-bon ammo was in responce to several request for a great self defense bullet in this round,,, from what I understand its the same bullet as the Taruas Hex ammo that was out just a little while ago..
The little carbine will kill deer all day long as long as you do the J.O.B.,, I have a WW-2 bud that uses one in the swamps, and keeps shots under 75 yards,, right now he is using the 110 Remington soft point,,,, remember it is basicly equal to 357 mag or maybe a 38 super,,, get close, and then as the ole elephant hunters use to say get 10 yards closer
