Hey all, i'm new to the forums here, but i had a quick question about some loads i'm ordering.

they are a 240 gr JHP on 24.5 gr of WC820. i do not know the primer used.

i put several of the jhps and three or four fmjs through my pistol (a mark 1 desert eagle with about 22k rounds on it)
and they did fine, cycled ok, didn't seem that hot, no hand smacking or large concussion waves, but everywhere i've looked on the net makes this load seem too hot. the guy loads these for his thompson contender, and this is his standard load. i was thinking i'd ask him to drop to 22gr instead of 24.5, as this would make the load closer to 24gr of h110 on a 240gr jhp(which we have put through the gun before, and it liked just fine). like i said, the pistol handled the 24.5 gr load ok, but i wanted to run this past some more knowledgable people before i commit my brass (and my health) to this round.

WC820 (and all surplus powders) can vary quite a bit in burning rate.

I'd run a couple over a chronograph and compare to published .44 mag data, before I drew any conclusions.

I would agree with the suggestion to drop the powder weight a little. Several years ago I ran a test comparing H110 and W296 and WC820. I used two different lots of WC820 and was very pleased with the results......but did find that my WC820 gave the same velocity results as the other powders with .5 grain less powder, so would suggest you not exceed recommended H110 or W296 weights until you're sure about the particular lot of WC820's performance.

I've read several articles that say although WC820 is a surplus version of H110, some lots are hotter and you would be safer using AA#9 loading data which is about 2gr lighter.

thanks for the info guys. as far as the chrono goes, i'll have to find sombody who has one for speed testing. my plan was to have the guy make up some samples from 22 to 24.5 in .5 grain increments and see what the differences were. however, if i can find a chrono, i'll definitely use it. de facto evidence is reassuring peace of mind.

My lot of WC820(n) that I got from www.gibrass.com (http://www.gibrass.com) states on the website to use AA#9 data.
