I am soon to get my hands on a BFR .475/480 and have been looking at the '06 Hodgdon manual. Although the .475 case is obviously longer, doesn't seem to do much more than the .480... This is the only place I have compared the two and was wondering if that is pretty much true. Any performance comparison between the two would be greatly appreciated.

The 475 Linebaugh is a 1.4"case and the 480 Ruger is a 1.285"case. The chamber pressures for the 475 are 50,000... The 480, 48,000.
The 475 if loaded to 48,000 will still out-perform the 480. (bigger gas tank) If you have the cylinder length you can always seat the bullet in a 480 to the length of a 475 and put in more powder. providing you have neck tension and proper crimp to hold the bullet in place. Then you have a 475, as you just gave the 480 a bigger gas tank.
One can do the same thing with 38Spc and a 357. The flexability is in the longer cases arena with the ability to shoot both, but not always true the other way around.
