Anybody ever tried this?

It seems to be a hair slower than 4198. Hodgdon lists H322 loads for 25-20. Their 4198 & 4227 loads for 25-20 seem roughly equivalent to 32-20 loads but I can't find any actual data for H322 in the 32-20.

Also, Hodgdon claims that their 4198 has been changed for better metering. Can anybody attest to this?

I can say the new shorter cut 4198 does meter better and it is easier to load some of the max charges with heavy bullets. The ..356, .375 and .444 tend to run out of case room with heavy bullets and every little bit helps.

I have not loaded H322 in the .32-20 (we have three of them) but I have shot quite a bit of it in the .375 and .444 with very good results. I like it and Benchmark. The difference is Benchmark seems to leave a few unburned or hard powder residue kernals in the chamber with certain load combinations. These kernals will dimple the case on the next round fired. I have not seen thi with H322.
Its hard to beat 4227 in the .32-20 rifle barrels, I like Unique in our Buckeye Ruger.

Thank you, William.

I have only loaded and shot 300 rounds to date but 4227 has given the best results so far.

The only two bullets I have used are the Hornady XTP in 85 grain and 100 grain. Both are very accurate in my rifle as long as I limit the velocity to around 1400 fps. I have some cast bullets on order but as it may be a while before I get them, I plan to try some of the Speer 100 grain bullets to see if they do better at higher velocities.

Ken,

You have a Marlin?
We had best results in our Marlin with 100 and 110 grain bullets. An exception to this is the 90 grain Sierra which shoots very well in our Marlin.
The Savage Model 23 like the Lyman 3110008 best.
What bullets do you have on order?
If you begin to load high velocity ammo for a Marlin careful examination of the cases at the pressure ring if called for. If you break a case they have a tendency to move forward in the chamber and can be difficult to remove. If you break a case and a stiff brush will not remove it use a Cerrosafe cast of the chamber and push it out that way.

Yes, it is a current production 1894 CL. The 100 grain bullets shot better than the 85s with 2400. I have a hundred more of the 85s that I am going to try with 4227 and see how that goes.

I ordered the Beartooth 115 grain sized to .314. Can you tell by looking at the picture what mold they are cast in? I would appreciate any load suggestions you have for that bullet as well. I was planning to start off with 4 grains of Unique and 7 grains of 2400.

Been getting good results with 4198. I am definitely going to buy a pound of H322 next time I get to the gettin place.

So far it is too close to call between 7.5 grains of 2400, 10 grains of 4227 and 13 grains of 4198 with the 100 grain bullets.

I had put this out of mind because my 4198 loads were shooting so well. I got the H322 to use for 30-30 loads and tested it in the 32-20.

14 grains of H322 and the 100 grain Hornady XTP is a very accurate load in my rifle.
