Can anyone answer this?

What caliber and what is the group size in inches of the world record small bore 1000 yd group?

My definition of small bore for this discussion would be .375 and below.

Try a group called Long Range Precision.com or do a google for them. They hunt at 1000 yds, and I believe their favorite is a 6x284 or 6.5. Our range has a 600 yd burm and even though the target is as big as your wing span, with out a guy in the pits I have no idea how you would pick up your hits.

In Google I found a record of 4.2278" by a guy using a Nesika action, a 26-inch Shilen barrel, 6BR cartridge with Lapua brass, Hornady 105 A-MAX bullets, Hodgdon powder and Federal match primer. This was in the 16.5 pound class.

Yup, there's a 1,000 yard category for bench rest shooting. Look up both the IBS and NBSRA records... those are the two major sanctioning bodies that I am aware of for bench rest shooting.

Might be some interesting data from the Palma match shooters (iron sights!), although I don't believe they normally shoot for groups.

I thought I remembered a Sierra Ad touting that someone had shot a world record 1000 yard group with a 6.5-284 and their bullets, but I can't find it off hand, I could also be thinking of the guy that Bird Dog mentioned and just have my facts all screwed up

I just wonder what the all time tightest group was. Maybe it is that example I found above. 4.2" for a ten shot group at 1000 does sound hard to beat! I wouldn't bet money against that guy in a 200 yd bottle cap shootin contest!

Here is the record 5 shot 600yd group in the heavy gun category.

"Terry's stellar .860" five-shot cluster is the equivalent of a 0.1433" group at 100 yards."

This one sounds awesome as well:

Rich DeSimone set a tough record to beat in the IBS Light Gun category with 1.564" 5-shot group at 1000 yards with his Ackleyized 6.5-284 Super and Clinch River 147s.

Yeah I agree. I would think a 1.5" 5-shot group at 500yds is tremendous. At 1000, it's almost unthinkable!

Bird Dog I once upon a time shot a group under 10 inches at 1000 yards using a 300 Win mag and 190 grain Sierra BT bullet using IMR-4831 powder.

However, there were many others who shot better that day with their custom rifle's. You need a well put together rifle, a ton of marksmanship (real talent) and the Luck Of The Irish to boot. :D

The all time world record for 1000 yard shooting was broken twice in the last two years. The first time the record was broken was in the Heavy Gun category, Craig Taylor shot a 3.2395 Inch group with a custom 50 BMG. The second time was this past year and Skip Talbot broke it big with a 2.6002 inch 1000 yard group. I'm thinking that one may stand a while. That's real close to 1/4 MOA!!! Pretty good shooting huh???

OOps...looks like Rich Desimone did it again third time...1.5640 group at 1000. Well, just goes to show you how you should enjoy your 5 minutes of fame. Wonder how long that record will last???? That is some really good shooting, especially with a wood stock. What is really amazing and yes, I realize that you said "small bore", is that Rich beat the big bore record of 2.6002 inches with a 6.5 mm, which don't know if that had ever been done b4. Wow!!!

I shot a 2.4010 inch group once in F Class with a .308 Win Rem model 9705 at 600 myself, just recently in fact. Kept the target because I thought that was pretty good for that rifle. 168 grain sierra and 47.0 grains V N550 powder, LC 72 brass and CCI br2 primers. If you figure that out to 1000, it should figure for about 4.0 at that distance. Haven't shot it at 1000 yet though so don't know for sure. May give it a whirl at the Texas shoot later this month.

Now this is what I think would be fun!! I just wish there was someplace close that a guy (or gal) could at least shoot at 500 or 600 yds. Maybe I can convince some farmer to let me use one of his pastures. LOL!

In a hunting class gun (meaning under 10lbs) a gent told me today that it was a Browning 7mmWSM. Apparently it shot a five shot group of about 10". Pretty darn strong for an off the shelf gun. Probably had an anti-aircraft scope on it or something. Could be a lot of crap for all I know.
