View Full Version : Scope mount help, please
I put a scope on my 1894CL 32-20. Its a Leopould 4X with Weaver Grand Slam mount and rings, I thought I might need the windage adjustment.
With a load that has consistently put five shot groups under 1" at fifty yards, with iron sights, I can't keep five shots on a 8x11 sheet of paper at 100 yards with the scope.
I just got done taking the scope off and remounting it, nothing was loose or appeared to be binding. The scope itself just came back from Leopould for servicing.
This mount was obviously made to handle a much larger scope. Look at how much hangs off the front of the receiver.
Any ideas or suggestions for a different mount would be apppreciated.
I'm going to try it again tommorow with some different loads, maybe shoot at 50 yards to see what happens. I'm shooting fairly light loads, maybe they can't make it 100 yards. :(

I would go to a different base and ring set up. It also looks like the scope is really far forward. Maybe this is causing you to lean too much into the gun just to be able to see through the scope. I could see this causing grouping issues.
These are the bases I have on mine. They are a weaver style, but are made of steel. I use Burris Z-Rings also. They are also a steel ring.

Hope this helps.
It is too far forward. I can move it back but then I will only have two screws holding the base on.
I think I'm going to get the two piece weaver type bases and rings.

You have the wrong base. Get a garden-variety Weaver 63B.
If that's the compact Leupold 4x, then you may need the Leupold version of the weaver base, which has an extra cross-slot to give you some flexibility in the ring placements.

Weaver 63B is the ticket.
Thanks for the help everybody. I ordered the 63B and the Leupold "weaver" mount. Hopefully one or the other will work.

KenK, the Weaver mounts are the way to go on the Marlins. They guys gave you the goods. Hope this resolves it for you.
I just recently pulled my aged Weaver V4.5 off my 94C .357 and went back to my Lyman peep sight. I like it better this way, but like being able to do both.
I got the scope mounted with the 63B and all appears well after a limited amount of shooting.

Redfield used to make a mount for the 1894 that was just like the Leupold base . I do not believe they make them anymore thou. I would like to have 5 or 6 of these for my rifles.
All of my 1894's that have scopes on them have the Weaver 63B base . I'm not a proponent of Weaver bases at all , I prefer Leupold . But the weavers work well even if they do not look good in my eyes .
I had thought of buying a couple sets of the Weaver GS's to try . Glad I haven't now ;)
I actually think the mount in my picture above will work very well on the 1894, just have to cut it in half and drill some new mounting holes.

I didn't see the photo earlier :(
Weaver owns the Redfield name now , and that is the Redfield base I made mention of earlier . I'd never heard of anyone having that problem before .
May just order one and try it myself . I cannot imagine them bringing it back if it didn't work .
It works; it is just a poor design, IMO. Maybe it works better on the 336???
No reason at all not to have moved the mount aft the 1/2-5/8" necessary to be able to use both of the rear mounting screws and unless you were going to put a huge scope on there is no reason to have it extending that far forward.
That much mount hanging in thin air can't be conducive to accuracy.

Will the weaver 63 work well with different ring spacings? I read somewhere that it is a "two slot base"? and that smaller scopes and red dot type sights might not fit on it?
There are only two slots in the Weaver 63B mount. With Weaver Grand Slam rings, the inside measurement between the rings is about 2 5/8" .
The Leupold "weaver" mount has an extra slot at the front.

KenK is correct. I had to put a Leupold base on my .444 for a 2x7 compact scope.
