I am seeing a lot of threads that imply that this is an older model and not generally available and I dont see it on Marlins website anymore. My plan was to get this rifle along with a Cimmeron model P, both chambered in .357 magnum. I fired expert in the military ( which doesnt mean a whole lot seeing as how the targets arent moving much ) and I generally hit what I am firing at right where I expect the round to go. I have a hand me down Win 70 that was my dads and it has only been fired 6 times in 20 years, but I really like the look and feel of a straight stock lever gun. Is the Marlin .357 magnum capable of putting a Texas whitetail down at 100 to 150 yds? and is the rifle worth buying if it has been discontinued? I mean. I like the Marlin 336 .30-30 as well. Since I dont see the .357 on Marlins site I am presuming that it is no longer in production. Sadly , I see that Winchester appears to be closeing the model 94 out as well. If I had a chance to get both ( that is one or the other ), what would yall recommend... the Marlin or the Winchester. Assuming of course that I can find either one at a reasonable price and condition

Thanks

Marlin still offers the 1894 in .357 in a couple different versions. The 24" barrel has been discontinued, seems the short barrels are more popular.

A lot of people think a discontinued model is more desirable.

Marlins website leaves much to be desired. Click on 1894C to see that version and 1894 Cowboy 45Colt to see the listing for that one.

I got curious about this and searched the gun auction sites. I could not find a 24" 1894 in .357, only 45LC and 44mag.

Does anyone know for sure if Marlin made the Cowboy Limited II (or whatever they called the 24" barrel/checkered stock version) in .357 magnum?

Yep , my 24" 1894CB 357 in the safe hasn't shrunk any :D

I have the 357 , 44-40 , 44 MAG and 45 LC , and they all have 24" barrels.

I have an 1894CCL in 32-20 , an 1894CCL in 41 and the 1894CB in 32 MAG , they are all 20".

Personally I like the 24" barrel more then the 20". But I do not shoot CASS .

For reference my 336CB's in 30-30 and 38-55 have 24" barrel's . And my 1895CB in 45-70 has a 26" barrel .

The "Cowboy" II limited was not really discontinued but Marlin just shortened the barrel and went to smooth stocks.
I had one in .44 mag and sold it in a fit of stupidity. The 24 inch barrel gives a better sight picture, the 20" a quicker one. You might also get a little more velocity out of the longer barrel. You'll be well suited to start cowboy action shooting w/ the Marlin rifle and Uberti revolver in .38/.357, low recoil using .38's and very cheap ammo cost, plus having a deer killer using .357 mag loads. As you stated, 100 yards is maxing out the .357, 150 yards is pushing it. Use good judgement.

I seem to remeber they did make some of those in .357 mags with 24" barrels back when I got my .44 mag cowboy II limited with a 42"barrel. I think they stopped making the 24" .357 mags about the time they stopped the making the .44 mag CBII limited 24" barrels. You might find one on the used market.
