Does anybody have any experience with the BOSS system on browning's rifles? I am looking to purchase a new A-Bolt II chambered in .300 WSM and their website had pretty much SOLD me on this system...until I went today to my local gun store to ask about ordering one and the store owner said they were JUNK AND NOT TO BUY IT.

What gives? Does anybody have any solid experience with one of these? How long have you had it? Have you shot a rifle in the same caliber without it? What do you think?

Sorry for all the questions, but it's a big investment, and I don't want to be sorry I did/didn't buy one with the BOSS. I currently have a Browning A-Bolt II chambered in .223 WSSM for varmints w/out the BOSS and LOVE the rifle. I just seem to have a hard time believing Browning would make a junk rifle.

Thanks a bunch,

Jonathan

I have not shot one but know those who have. It works. You have to work with it everytime you shoot paper, but it will serve good enough for hunting. When shooting paper you are trying to get the vibrations of the barrel in the right time, to shoot the best it can. All barrels have "whip". They use similar units, even ones that are magnetic for .22 rimfire bench guns. I would be interested in knowing what there reasoning was that made it junk.

I have a Model 70 Featherweight Classic Boss in .30-06. It is the same system as Browning (as the former Winchester was owned by the same parent Corp.) Anyway it does work. You will have a setting for 165gr loads and another the shoots better for 180gr loads, etc. You will want to get a CR plug for hunting. That probably comes with the system. The CR plug still allows you to adjust, it simply is solid and has no recoil reduction porting like the standard plug does. If you take the standard plug hunting, expect your ears to ring for a few days after killing your game.

Now, if your going to develop one or maybe two loads for all your hunting, I would not get the Boss. It's big advantages are being able to use the whole range of .30 cal bullets and recoil reduction while target shooting. The rifle looks classier without it though and most quailty bolt guns shoot well with their pet load. You just have to find that load. With a Boss, you can match the gun to a load, rather than the opposite.

From what I have read, the short mag really doesn't handle the longer 200 and 220 grain bullet options that well due to the short neck. Therefore, it might not have as much utility as a Boss would in a .30-06.

- I had a buddy-of-mine that had a Browning-Rifle with the BOSS-System...He got-it when we were at Quantico. When I asked him about-it a few years later, when I ran-into him while up at Bridgeport-CA...He said he still had it and was very-satisfied with it's performance. He was...and still-is quite a Hunter and Rifleman, and since he wore the coveted "Distinguished-Marksman" Badge...he had made his name with the long-range-iron-sighted-stuff. He told me shootin the BOSS-System with a scope was pretty-smooth in all aspects of what he used the rifle-for.

I owned a BAR with the BOSS, Worked exactly like it was advertised to. That autoloader would flat out shoot.

I've never cared for things attached to the end of a barrel and believe it uspsets the looks of a rifle. Thats the reason none of my rifles have them, but as a gunsmith for a bunch of years I've have worked over several rifles equiped with them. They work exactly as advertised and are a fine addition to a rifle.

Most good factory rifles will deliver acceptable hunting accuracy, The boss allows you to fine tune that accuracy to several different bullet weights.
