Perhaps some of you guys could help me. I have always wanted to build a small caliber flintlock rifle. Recently an elderly gunsmith passed away and his supplies were sold off by the family. In one of the misc boxes was an old lock. I got it at a good price, free, but had no idea if it was workable or suitable as a foundation for my rifle idea.

I have since discovered that it is a 1762 Charleville lock design. The parts to the lock do not appear to be machine made, it shows wear, primarily buggered screws which appear to be homemade, or at least were slotted by hand. The faces are flat as are the edges of the lock plate. It has no proof marks but is marked "1762" on the lock plate.

The lock will require that I make some new screws and will require a clean up and probably re case hardening.

What are the challenges associated with building a squirril rifle out of the this lock?

btw.....this week I orderd the Track of the Wolf catalog and a book on recreating the American Flintlock rifle.

I would also be interest in period correct engraving patterns as I intend to engrave the furniture on my rifle. Any advise or assistance would be greatly appreciated. I am an experienced breechloader building but have no previous experience with muzzleloaders.
