Holy Crud.

My shoulder hurts.

I'm loading H4895 and my velocity at 65.5gr is 2650 +/- which is about 100fps faster than it should be. The good news is that my last string of three of 5 were 1.5" @ 100 yds.

Hornay Vol6 pg558 has 68.1 gr of H4891 published at approx 2600fps.

The Ruger #1 Tropical hurts. I mean hurts. This thing makes my 12Ga. slug guns feel like .22 rimfires.

I'm going to try the Barnes TSX, back a little further off the lands and switch to a slower powder.

Any thoughts on IMR 4064, Varget or RL-15?

Your experience, or arm slings, ice packs or other medical supplied would be greatly appreciated.

It is a "mental thing". Remember that it is the other end of the rifle that hurts!

Keep shooting until it doesn't hurt anymore. It's been a long time since I've had any bruising or soreness in my shoulder.

I used to shoot my M70 375 H&H from a kneeling position over sandbags. Pull it in tight and push forward with the off hand. Dont tighten up your back. That way some of your weight will be added to the rifle and reduce recoil. Dont lean into the rifle, keep your back straight up. This can also be done from the standing position with a higher rest. Thats what the gunsmiths who regulate double guns do. Also the Speer 235 grain bullet with minumum loads works as a practice load. My gun would throw almost any bullet weight into the same POI. Its a great round for the handloader. The fit of the stock makes a big difference with big bore recoil. You might want to have a gunsmith check your fit, but the No.1 is a light gun.

I got to shoot a 375 H&H in a Ruger #1 for a guy who was scared of it, I got it sighted in in about 5 rounds then proceded to about run him out of shells. :D He stopped me while there was 4 or 5 left so he could go elk hunting that weekend. I had a ball shooting it to say the least. I'd like to get me one but like they say wish in one hand and  oh well you get the picture.

EMC2, try putting a sand bag in etween the butt and your shoulder. That really spreads it out. That's what I used to do before I made my "Bob" sled.

1.5" groups is pretty good for a big thumper like that. The slower powder should fill up the case more but it will probably hurt a bit more.

Have fun!!!

Definately...

I'm a glutton for punishment though. "Mental Thing" is exactly right. Toward the end, I just resigned to the fact that it was going to hurt, but no matter what I was not moving that gun before it moved me. I'm shocked that the last three made it in the hole, but like was said. Mind over it won't matter till later when you try to wash your hair.

Good tips on the body positioning and sand bags. I will give it a whirl.

The Ruger has a thin, hard rubber buttplate, unless you have changed it and put on something else. That hard rubber can hurt, as it does not give and the edges can dig into the muscles.
Have you tried the PAST recoil pad, that you slip over your shoulder. I have used one and found that it did a great job in making a heavy kicker much more bearable. I used to fire 100 rounds in a day with a .45-70 and 535 grain bullet, prone, and at the end of the day I would have a recoil headache. With the PAST, the same amount of shooting was not a problem.
Had a .375, but it was a heavier BRNO, and a lot of rounds were not a problem. Used 4064 or 4350.

EMC2, Im pushing a Sierra 300 grain BTSP at 2475-2500 fps through mine. Yep, same Ruger Number 1 Tropical in 375 H&H. Only rifle that has ever "bitten" me. They do shoot don't they? I like IMR 4350 and Reloader 19. H4350 didn't group quite as well. Its funny, I tend to shoot it better after being pounded on a bit. Groups start at 1 1/2 inch for 5 and go down to under an inch after shooting 4-5 groups. Get a PAST Recoil Shield for shooting from the bench. It will take a lot of the bite out. Its a good thing these rifles don't jump up, only jump back, otherwise I'd be missing a cheekbone by now.

One last item.
Ice and Ibuprophen. Your shoulderblade will go back to its normal place after a couple days. :D

Nice Mike.

RL-19 huh?
I have some of that stuff in stock. Did you ever do a 270gr bullet with it?

Also, I do have a Mod 70 and a Savage LE that like to shoot better when dirty...

I'm going to try some .270gr Barnes TSX next. I'm just looking for some data.

You might take it to a gunsmith and talk about whether there might be a better buttpad than what you have. Also, browse thru Midway (or equivalent) to see whether you have the max recoil absorbtion available.

The factory pads on the Number One are not the best for recoil absorbtion. You have figured that out Im sure. Some day when I hit the lottery, I'll have a Pachmyr Decellerator pad put on mine, but for now, the Past Recoil Shield works fine. I'vegot too many other irons in the fire to have the work done now.

Well, yeah I do. Really! Even though that wasn't the thrust of the thread, it's a fact of the big bores. Believe me it won't keep me from shooting it, in truth, I'm too ticked off to let that piece of metal and wood beat me out. I can't wait to get back there this weekend and do it again. I just wanted to share the pain :D

Now, all I need is a load with IMR 4350...??
