i,ve a uberti 45\70 high wall w \32 in. barrel, and about 500 laser cast 300 gr. 459 lead slugs to shoot up . i,m trying to obtain some accurate5744 to load for this pile of bullets. i,d like to keep the recoil down a tad hoping that my shoulder will outlast the amount of shooting i have to do. i plan on starting at 50 yds. and then going to 100. i,ve read on the accurate site about the work they,re doing with this powder in the old bpcr . can anyone tell me of their experiences with this particular powder. thanks johnpi

I tried 5744 and SR 4759 in my .45-70 and found more recoil for the same velocities as other powders and less accuracy. So, I went back to using Green Dot and 2400.

You might find some lighter loads you like here. (http://www.gmdr.com/lever/lowveldata.htm)

johnpi,

I take it, that you have these bullets, and want to shoot them till gone, right? And want it mild yet accurate using 5744, is that correct?
I found 21 grains of 5744 to shoot well in a Pedersoli 45-70 32" barrel I had. It is lower in recoil, but not mild as other powders.
If you want low recoil, I vote with paul5388, use another powder. Unique worked real good- 13.5 grains w/300 gr and 13 grains w/500 gr, both shoot accurate. I also found it to shoot better w/filler in Unique loads.

Hope this helps.

Have Fun Shooting,
Jon

johnpi,

I like 5744 in my trapdoor Springfield; my only complaint is that I usually end up with a few unburned granules of powder that when the Springfield tosses the case,a couple will fall into the trapdoors action requiring a quick cleaning.
I've found 28 grs to be very accurate with the same bullet you will be shooting.
A good thing about 5744 is the high nitro glycerine base to the powder which allows you to fire with reduced loads regardless of the powder position. I've heard good and bad things about dacron fillers, so I tend to stay away from them.
IMR's Trailboss will also give you good light recoil loads.

Good luck,
whizzum
