Picked up a small ring mauser today that is stamped globe 888. made in austria, 308 win. Didn't pay much for it 90.00 but was wondering if anybody knows anything about them. It has iron sights but is still cock on closing and the military trigger and safety. The bolt handle has been changed to alow the use of a scope. Thanks Jim.

Interesting, post a picture. Wonder if it is an 1888 model? Sure hope not... that wouldn't be a good candidate for a .308, by any means.
93-95-96 model mausers are all cock-on-closing as well. Might be one of them.

Jim, Does it resemble any of these?

The 888 sounds like an Ordnance code. It was very common up until the 1950's

Small ring Mausers may be stamped .308, but 7.62x51 Nato ammo is correct. .308 runs at pressures to high for small ring Mausers.
Pics would be helpful. JP
Edit, I believe Globe was an importer at one time.

It is semi sporterized with the bolt handle bent non military sights and a sporter stock. I am pretty sure that it is a 95 also says special boehler steel on the barrel opposite side to made in austria. Tried some lake city match rounds in it and it seems to function well. Thanks Jim
