It depends on the individual people involved in processing your permit.
When I origionally submitted a request for pistol permit,I lived in the city of Newburgh. It just laid there for over 3 months.
I then moved to the town of New Windsor(immedietly next ommunity to the South)and reubmitted it.
It was processed within 2 weeks.
The same applies to adding guns to the permit. Some judges will sit on it for about a mounth, but one kept it for 9 momths.
Check out how other pitol owners,in your community have fared.
Good Luck!
Frank

What county are you in?

Monore county is one of the more gunowner-cooperative counties in NY. Here, it takes 4-6 mo.

If you have a friend who's a cop or local politician who might put in a word for you, you can get it moved along immediately.

State law says you have to have your answer in 4 mo. But, remember that the easy answer, that can be given quickly, is "declined".

My license took 9mo, because the prints were smeared, and couldn't be checked with the FBI. They weren't gonna tell me about that, though; I only found out when I called for the status. Then, I hadda be reprinted.

The helpful answer for you is that you can call your bureau where you filed, and very politely inquire on your application's status. Be very friendly & helpful - ask whether there's anything else you might need to provide to help them process the application. Ask them to check your file to be sure everything they need is there & in order. Ask for a rough estimate on how soon they might complete it. Don't urge them to expedite it, or demand anything, though. Thank them profusely, and sincerely wish them a nice day. You can inquire again after 3 wks more, or so.

I once attended a talk by a NYS License lawyer who said that he had cases of licenses being denied because the applicant was rude in the clerk's presence ( not even directly to the clerk ). Or, they'll harass you back by adding restrictions to your license.

Good luck!

I remember old Frank White (the southern sportsman) used to say on his TV show that you had to lie in NC to get a permit to buy a handgun. If I remember correctly, you had to say in fron of a clerk or majistrate or sheriff or something that you were buying the handgun for target practice. Any other reason was grounds for denial of the permit. It was a big deal to him being from the "square set" as most of us old timers are. From the way this new crowd is stepping up to the plate for freedom there may be another old square set on the way.

…say in front of a clerk or magistrate or sheriff or something that you were buying the handgun for target practice. Any other reason was grounds for denial of the permit…

This is not such a good ploy in NY. If one does only claim "target practice" on one's application, the license may be issued with a restriction to only that activity. Then, if caught carrying for hunting or self-defense, the license may be revoked for all purposes forever!

The correct ploy here is to claim all possible purposes which one might want, e.g. hunting, self-defense, formal and informal target shooting, protection of the home, and anything else that sounds plausible, yet not overly aggressive or paranoid.

How bout "cause I'm a legal citizen of the USA and it's my constitutionally guaranteed RIGHT!!..."

Suppose there's too much logic involved in that argument for 'the power that be' to understand!!

Best of luck to you folks in NY NJ CA and IL (all other oppressed states that I can't remember!!)

Sorry, RANT OFF, this is the reason I'll never be a citizen of my home state (IL) ever again.

I was down to Washington, and went to see the original Constitution on display in the National Archives. I looked down at the Amendments, and was shocked to find that the 2nd Amendment said nothing whatsoever about arms. Don't remember what it did discuss. I went on to the 3rd, and it was the right to bear arms. Turns out the first 2nd amendment didn't get ratified after all, so the original 3rd amendment became our 2nd amendment.

Man O man, it has gotten bad! Sorry to hear it! I use to shoot at a range in Island Trees High School. I took my hunter training course at the county complex in Nassau. I have friends there who get hassled going to the range. I have one friend that sold me an FR8, he got pulled over outside the range he used(note the last word) and the cops freaked. They stop by his house 2 times a year to see if he still owns his handguns. They would hate to see me move back! As John Lennon would say, this is "bad karma". I grew up in Hicksville. It use to be a nice town! Time for some action. This is out of control. Time for the folks in Albany to set it strait! See if Jack Pearson is still living there, or alive. He will help! I can help you w/ ILA contacts. Contact me! Glad I moved! NH is 1 week! That is for concealed carry, not to own. Nothing is regulated except concealed carry ( one permit, $10.00 is good for all, for 3 years ), and full auto. JP

...Time for the folks in Albany to set it strait!…

Elliott Spitzer is running for governor this year, practically unopposed. You may remember him - as atty gen'l he's leading the way in anti-gun-mfr suing, even after Congress made it illegal!

Yeah, he'll fix it for us, alright!

When I lived in New York, it depended on which county you lived in.. Originally I was in Albany county. My first permit took 9 months. Each permit following that took from 1 to 4 months to get. When I moved to Columbia county, the permit was issued from immediately to 1 week. In mississippi, there is no permit system, you get the gun immediately if instant check is OK1 The weather is better too!!!! :D Art

Glad to hear it Joe. You definitely need patience going through the system in NY. I got my permit almost 20 years ago and it was a 6 month ordeal back then too.

I don't how you folks in the repressive states stand it. We have instant check here. If they have to separate you from someone with a similar name, it may take up to 3 days but the law says if you don't hear a no, you can take it home. Any non class-3 or AOW firearm. Usually, it takes 5 minutes or less.
