View Full Version : Cleaning Mold
Hello
I was wondering what is the best way to clean a Lee bullet mold. I use Lee NRA Formula Alox Bullet lube stick to lubricate my mold. Is there a better way to do this so it does not get so cruddy.
Thank for the input.

I remember that Lee recomends lubing the mold alignment pins with a touch of alox. Smoke the mold with butaine. I don't recall cleaning instructions?
I would clean with alcohol or similar and start over!
Your post does not speak of the problem you are having?

I guess the problem that I am having is that after awhile when I close the mold the alignment pins do not catch right and it sits off center one side of the mold is higher than the other.
The lube I have put on has burnt off and leaves a crusty surface.

For lubing alignment pins, sprue-plates and hinge screws, I exclusively use a product called Dri-Slide which is extremely temperature insensitive and l-o-n-g lasting. The best product we've found for this application.
As for your crusty build-up on your Lee molds, I'd suggest soaking them in some clutch and brake cleaner for a spell, then using a brass parts brush to get the crud removed once it's soaked a bit. The clutch and brake cleaner won't leave a residue on the mold.
God bless,
I've never cleaned a mould ever.

I've never cleaned a mould ever.
Have cleaned all of my moulds at least once, even the new ones which is recommended by the manufacturer. Use an aerosol brake cleaner and scrubbing with a nylon toothbrush on both blocks and sprue plate. Allow to dry and follow up with denatured alcohol and another scrubbing with the toothbrush. Have not gone so far as to working on the sprue plate screw or the Allen headed set screw. Want my moulds clean and dry so have not treated the screws with any lubricant. Store the moulds in an air-tight GI ammo can with a large bag of desicant. Works for me.

Ahhh... mold cleaning.
Here is what has worked for me so far.
Take some "Comet" kitchen cleaner and an old electric tooth brush. Hot water will help over cold tap. (I have found)
In a matter of minutes, the surfaces are clean and free.
Dirty molds tend to prevent propper bullet drop. (along with burs)
I do use a light coating of graphite mold release spray after the blocks have fully dried. Good for about 300 bullet drops before doing anything again.
I opened up the gas vents when I last had my blocks apart for cleanup. Took a carbide scribe and carefully went along the lines, one by one. This does help with fillout on Lee single and double cavity blocks.
