Hello, I am currently scrounging gunshows and gunbroker.com for the M1886 winchester in .45-70.
My question to you is if the 86 is capable of handling the "hot" loaded version of 45-70 the way the 1894 is capable of handling 45 Colt +P. Thank you.

The 86 action is like the door to a bank vault. your shoulder will give out long before the rifle.Good luck.Jim.

Which 86 do you have? The one made for black powder or smokeless powder? I think you should ask the gunsmith whom you want to check the gun out. You have done that before shooting it haven't you? With used guns that is the norm but especially in the case of an 86 or anything made in the era of more than one pressure intensity. I once saw a rough looking Marlin 38-55 that I wouldn't have shot with blank black powder loads without a gunsmith checking it out. Good luck. Bandito

I'm talking about the Modern 1886. I don't have the kind of money for an antique.

The modern 86's made by Miroku for Browning and Winchester should handle anything you would run in a 1895 Marlin. The only exception to this could some loads using 500 grain bullets. The chamber in my Winchester 1886 Takedown (Miroku 1999) seems to be a little short for some 500 grain lead bullets. They will chamber, but you can feel the increased effort to close the lever all the way. The ejected round shows the rifling engraved into the bullet.

Well, I guess it wouldn't be a real problem considering that I'll only fire blackpowder.
If I wanted to shoot smokeless powder, I'd go with my favorite smokeless powder rifle cartridge, 30-06.
