Two old tug boat captains working the Columbia River bar would pass each other and every time, one would yell, "Aye", and the other would respond the same. Then one would toot his horn one time, and the other would respond in kind.
One day, a new deck hand couldn't stand it and asked the first mate why they did that.
The first mate responded, " Haven't you ever heard of and aye for an aye and a toot for a toot"?
