I have a 45 apc with fix sights that shoots tight groups at 20 yards but 6 inches low using 230 factory ammo. short of installing adj. sights what can i do to make this shoot point of aim. will shooting 180 raise the point os aim?

According to the manual Springfiled Armory pistols are designed to use the "6 o'clock" sight picture (niner's exhibit 1) at 25 yards. However, some pistols may shoot "point of aim" (niners exhibit 2)at 25 yards depending on shooter and ammunition.

well short from changing either your front or rear sight, I guess you could file the top of the front sight down a bit until it shoots where you want it to, but I would get new sights personally, not necessarily adjustable sights but something of a different height. Either a taller rear or a shorter front.

Brownells has a calculator that will tell you what height front sight you need. My Springfield shoots low as well, but it is only 3" low at 25 with 200gr SWC. Shooting 180s will likely drop the point of impact even more. I am eventually going to install a new, or file down my front sight, as I would much rather have it hit a wee bit high than low. If you handload, you can bring the point of impact up by slowing the velocity down some.

I would only look inot different sight if you are sure this is the ammo you will be using moat of the time. Try a different brand with the same 230 grainers. Might change point of impact. Just be sure of your load before investing in new sights.

well, just one more thing you may want to try before going to a different sight; you may want to try a looser grip. I don't know if you have tried this as of yet or how much pistol experience you have, but when I bought my ruger p97 I thought it was shooting low, however I found that the gun really likes a loose grip in order to be shoot at point of aim (well, actually 6 o' clock hold)

Niner, these are some of the best illustrative pictures I have seen of what sight picture is supposed to look like. Thanks for posting them. Good teaching tool!

no problem, I actually borrowed the top picture from wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_sights) and photoshopped it to make the bottom one.
