View Full Version : Curley Ash 444
I am trying to learn to post pictures on here. This is my 444 that I salvaged from a house fire. The stock was charred pretty good. I replaced it with some ash that I cut down 12 years ago. As you can see it sure did have some pretty figure to it.http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i274/tnwhip/6491296d.jpg
How do you post with the picturn in the message. Like I see a target in some of the post?
I may be stupid but I am not dumb.

First, WOW! That's beautiful work. Second, I've been called many derogatory names, but "Curly Ash" is a new one. Should I be offended?
To get your photos in as part of the message, use the "post reply" button at the top of the message thread, rather than the quick reply at the bottom. One of the available options is to "manage attachments" and this will allow you to upload your photogragh, and it automatically creates the thumbnail image in the message.
Some say my loads are too hot LOL. This is the scope that was on the rifle after the fire.

If the fire was intense enough to all but melt the scope, I'd have the rifle hardness tested to make sure it wasn't tempered or stress relieved by the heat. There had to be some effect on the steel of that rifle.
Better safe than sorry...

Ah... yeah. I don't remember the melting point of aluminum, off-hand, but I am pretty sure it is above the point that you start tempering steel.
That's a beautiful restocking job. I'd transfer the stock to a new rifle.
I know the scope looks bad but I had two gun smiths tear it down and look at it. Everything in it was good. All the springs were good and everything else looked good. I have been a blacksmith for 25 years, this is how I make my living and I know about tempering and anealing steel. I know it got hot but it just chared the forarm around the edges and the worst was the wrist right at the tang. It was in a closet. The fire must have come through in the corner right at the scope. When you aneal, you bring steel to a cherry red and let it cool very very slowy over hours. The rifle got hot but not hot enought to change any tempering. The house was a friends and we were there when the firemen put it out. I feel safe about the gun or I would not shoot it.

Who care's about safety? I'm still fuming about being called curly ash!
And I'm thinking about throwing one of my rifles in a fire to see If it will shoot like Whip's
What kind of smithing do you do Whip?
My Great Grandad was a blacksmith, my dad and I fooled with it some. My older brother is a master.
I do general Blacksmithng make some ornimental stuff but mainly make stuff for Buckskinners like belt and bag buckles, Knifes, Tomahawks, Flintstrikers.Make some flintlock rifles and smoothbores with handforged butt plates,Triggerguards.and other rifle parts. In the summer months I recondition bush hog blades. Straighten if need to and reforge the blades sharp.I can make most anything like Door hinges and latches.ect.
Dang I tried to send another picture of some of my work but it did not come out said it was to big.I will try this.
