So I enjoy blowing large holes in the middle of bears in N. Idaho. This was previously done with a 338WM. Now I have a new opportunity to do it in Montanny, and late this year in AK. Not that I'm not confident in the 338. But I tripped it a while back, and it's time to re-up. I have been very interested in both the 376 Steyer and even the "new" 338 Federal. But the latter isn't really in the same class.

So for all of you that hate factory, roll your own, and shoot 33's or larger: Anyone have expirence with the Steyer? Any opinions??

I have a 376/Steyr-Scout...I bought it as a companion-rifle to my .308/Steyr-Scout.
- It was my first-step in the Non-Standard-Caliber direction.
- My .350Rem-Mag-Scout Project was going nowhere at the time...and I wanted a "Fire-Plug-Scout" badly.
- I have fired around 400rds through-it in formal-training...
...and I took-it to Africa last year...Where I harvested some very-nice horns and skulls.
- My pet-load is pushing a 250GRN/Swift-A-Frame around 2650FPS from a 19-inch-tube.

The projectiles punched fore-to-aft...or through shoulder-to shoulder of every animal I addressed in the 50-1000lbs-Class from ranges of 16-160yds....and all the Swift/A-FRAMES performed as advertised, perfectly - regardless of what media, or resistance they met after leaving my barrel. I am very impressed with both the cartridge and the rifle, and would not hesitate to challenge ANY animal on the Northern Continent with both of them combined. However, both the cartridge, and the rifle have their limitations...but none of them are a concern of mine regarding my views towards hunting, marksmanship or riflecraft.

It-[the-rifle]...is leaning against the wall in the corner of my office as I type this thread...
...It has an Advantage-Timber-Stock, A Leupold 2.5FX-Scope-[W/A HEAVY-Duplex-Reticle]...and a black-leather-sling...
...I am ashamed at how attached I have become to a material-object.

I have no experience with the 376-Steyre but can recommend a time old favoirite of mine.....the .375 H&H or the .375 Weatherby! Now that is if your .338 Win mag is getting weak in the knees lately.

Why don't you try some of those 275 grain Swift A Frames in your .338 Win mag? I am sure your needs for the 376 Steryer will disappear in a heart beat. :D
