View Full Version : PileDriver Jr report
I bought some PileDriverJRs for the fun of it. Man are they FUN. I got a good moderate load from Marshall that is scarry accurate. It is noticeably lighter in recoil than my non-recoiling PileDriver load. It is accurate out of the 2 guide guns and the Buffalo Classic with no sight changes. It's like the bullet regulates the sights!
However there is a difference in the rock breaking department. We shot some granite rocks, say fist size or two-fist size with the Jrs. Fragments flew off and the rocks spun around. But with the PileDriver the rocks broke and jumped up the berm. It was a whole 'nother experience.
To be fair, the 525s are probably going 200fps faster than the 425s, but it is still my go-to stopper round.
OTOH, the 425 will cleanly take anything that moves, in my opinion, even loaded down the way I like them. I mean, what's going to stop them?
Later on this year I will do some jug testing to try to get a definitive comparison. So far, NOTHING that is a legal hunting round has out-penetrated the PileDriver, and I am still waiting for a challenger.
It's wonderful to be back in Alaska, and it's great to have great ammo in the guns.
Hats off to Marshall and his fantastic product.

Welcome home, Grizz. I know what you mean about being back.
Everythime I go outside, even though i enjoy it immensely, When I clear Customs at the border, I feel like kissing the ground.
To an outsider, it's hard to explain, but this icebox is HOME!I guess it's the people.
Iwatched the turkeys in New Orleans in utter amazement. They sat around (some are still sitting) waiting for somebody else to do something for them.
In '95 the Koyukuk valley flooded. Those people lost everything they had, and winter was just around the corner. While the various agencies were still trying to figure out who was going to head up the recovery, the young men in Hughes chartered a plane to take them home, so they could get to work on the clean-up. By the time we arrived, they had all the houses cleaned out and the trash hauled away.
About the jr's, I have some, but I haven't had time to load them yet, much less shoot them. It's good to read a good report on them.

Grizz,
Glad that load is working for you! As I said on the phone, it's an addicting load, and soooooo fun to shoot. Too, I'm glad you found web access up there! Be blessed and have a great summer.
God bless,

I haven't had a chance to hang out on the forum for quite some time - just too much STUFF going on - mainly fishing season. I've been shooting nothing but Marshall's 525 gr. PileDrivers through the Guide Gun but have been interested in the PileDriver Jrs since my buddy received a box in our last order. Problem is, he hasn't gotten around to giving them a try. Grizz or Marshall, would one of you guys mind sharing the loading data with me? I shoot mostly H322 but I'm game for giving something else a try if you've developed a great load for the Jrs. If you prefer not to post the data in this thread, prehaps you could PM the info to me. I'll then place an order because my buddy ain't gonna share!!!

Hi Doug,
I got another crack at sharing the Jr.'s with another 45/70 shooter, this time a 22" Marlin 1895. Shot exactly to his sight's also. Really remarkeable for 4 different guns.
The load I used was 26gr 2400 in Starline brass with CCI 200 primers. It was suggested that Winchester Large Rifle primers were preferred, but my brass was already primed, so I just went with that.
3 different barrel lengths and the same results. It's downloaded and I didn't have the facilities to sort out the trajectory past 100 yards, but out that far you can't miss. No recoil to worry about, and I am guessing outstanding penetration as well. I need to run them into some jugs for momentum calibration... ;)
They were way more fun than the 325s I loaded for a play round. I couldn't shoot them because they are running so much higher than the others that I would have had to adjust my sights for elevation, something I try to avoid doing. Later on I will get the vernier dialed in for that bullet and see what its trajectory looks like.

Thanks much Grizz. I'll place an order and give them a try as soon as I return from vacation. This load sounds very interesting and I'd like to see how the Guide Gun likes 'em. I'd be really interested in finding out what the muzzle velocity is, maybe this justification for buying a chrono!
