Hello, I'm new to the forum and have enjoyed all the little 'extras' on the beartooth site. I'm trying to work up a load for my SRH and was wondering if other SRH owners have found a particular bullet weight (or diamater) these guns like? I would like to stay in the 250-300gr range and will use Blue Dot around 1200fps.

I suspect that I really can't go wrong as long as I keep the speed at that level. I'm just wondering if someone has found a weight or diameter that does better than others.

Next question is whether or not anyone has had success annealling the beartooth bullets or if people think its necessary at these speeds.

btw: The load will be for Southern Illinois Whitetail.

I've messed with annealing some, but never go around to trying them in the field.

Frankly... the wound channels with the WFN bullets in a .44 handgun, and LFN in a .44 rifle, are pretty impressive, as it.

I shot a small doe with a Beartooth 280gr. WFNGC, at a range of about 50 yards, with a Super Blackhawk. Muzzle velocity was over 1300fps.

Bullet went through the on-side shoulder (not too much damage), holed one lung, and pretty much chopped the liver in two (pieces hanging together by a thread, literally).

Needless to say it was fatal, and this with an un-annealed bullet. You don't even want to see what the Beartooth bullets do a rifle velocities.... big fun!

Rugers, generally, will handle bullets at the upper end of the dimensions. I just order 0.432" and shoot them in all of the Rugers I have.... best slug it, to be sure. Fit the cylinder throats and you should be fine.

Best of luck with your loads, and welcome to the forum.

Welcome to the forum Soilarch. I've shot two Rugers over the past few years. A Super Redhawk with 7.5 inch bbl and a Redhawk with a 5.5 inch bbl.

both guns liked a 255 grain Kieth style cast bullet with a gas check. This came out of a Lee custom mold and I usually used linotype or wheel weight metal. This load left the 7.5 inch bbl at 1350 and the 5.5 inch bbl at 1250. Both would do six inch groups at a hundred yards off the bench rest.

I didn't do a lot of deer hunting, but this load killed better than ten black bear at ranges out to 150 yards. Several deer were taken out to 80 yards and all but one bear were one shot kills. Animals never went more than about 35 yards.

If you use the Beartooth bullets I doubt annealing would add much to their performance which is top line.

Below is pix of both of these revolvers. They moved on to younger hunters this spring when I added a new turkey gun to the safe. I'm just getting to old to chase deer and bear with a handgun and I can sit down and wait for a turkey to come to me.

One thing I'd like to add is firelapping made both these guns more accurate.

Good luck hunting with that SRH, there a great gun.

Don't really mean to bring this to the top but my conscience tells me I need to inform the boys that I DON'T have a SRH. Long story short: I 'thought' I had one lined up and ready to go but a few days after making the post my seller backed out. (What are friends for, eh?) So I ended up ordering a RBH bisley hunter in 44mag. Kinda happy it all ended up the way it did though...'cause it came in today :D :D
