I stopped by one of the local gunshops today at lunch and spotted a nice looking Winchester on the rack - no price tag. I asked to look at it and quickly discovered that this was an older model (Serial number 1612XXX) made in 1949. They took it in yesterday from the original buyer who had kept it stored. Looking down the barrel with their bore light only further showed its lack of use. I've done a fair amount of business with these guys and after a few minutes was able to complete the purchase for $368. Other than one small rub mark on the barrel, this thing looked new.
As I completed the paperwork I found that the gentleman helping me used to cast bullets for many years but had to give it up (doctor's orders) He said he's got about 50 different molds and about 1000 pounds of lead in storage. He told me he paid $8 to $10 each for his molds and gave me his phone number and invited me to come by and see if there's anything I want. . . I didn't kiss him, but I think the look I gave probably tipped my hand that I was more than a little bit interested. I'm just getting into casting and still looking for several different moulds.
Lunch was expensive today.
