View Full Version : 11-87 SPS Deer?
Who here can tell me about an 11-87 Special Purpose Deer Shotgun?
It has a 20" smooth bore barrel with Rem Chokes on board.
Rifle sights included.
What would you use the 20" barrel for?
Is it long enough for a good 40-50 yd pattern @ 50 yds?
What choke would you use?
I found one I can pick up for $400 that is LNIB. Wood stock and comes with a factory camo sling and the box.
I'm just trying to figure out what I would use it for besides home-defense. I've never had a shotgun with such a short barrel.
Any help & opinions wouild be appreciated.

I have exactly this gun, and it is great. I use it for deer hunting with the rifled choke, and it hasnt let me down yet. I havent shot any shot out of it though...

The 20" barrel with the rifle sights are for use with rifled slugs for hunting deer. Just put the Imp. Cylinder choke tube in and your good to go. Put you an X-Full choke and use it for turkey. Modified would make a good rabbit gun. Full choke for squirrels. Or Imp. Cyl. choke for home defense. I am surprised to see an 11-87 with a smooth bore in the deer gun. It is worth the $400 and more. For your 50yd. pattern you are looking for, you will have to get you a X-Full choke tube. They are a really nice shotgun.

Didn't know that the 11-87's came with a 20" bbl. I have a 11-87,SPS-T with a 21' smooth bbl.(VR) with Rem.choke. The "T" stands for turkey. It is an all black gun with the "plastic" stock.
I would say that the price to you is very good and would suggest that you pick it up.
Mine has shot good and have probably put 3000 rds. thru it during my crow hunting days in Maine.
I have replaced the piston, piston seal, and the bbl seal one time and have a spare in stock. These are cheap and very easily replaced by owner. The weapon will not shoot the very light target loads but will function with everything above that.
Remember also that the length of bbl makes NO difference as to the choke. A 18" will shoot just as tight as a 26". I have also always heard that with shotguns as long as your bbl is 19 inches your getting the same velocity as a 22,24,and 26 incher.
Pick it up,you'll enjoy it.-----pruhdlr
