Joe,

You don't give us much in the way of how you'll be using this new handgun!

If I'm hunting, I've got my Ruger Bisley Blackhawk in .45 Colt, loaded with Marshall's 280 grain Hammerheads at 1200 fps.

If I'm CCW, I've got my Colt 1911 in .45 ACP loaded with 185 grain JHP ammo.

So, what are you going to use this handgun for??

I agree with El Lobo. A Revolver for hunting, and a Semi-Auto for CCW.

I agree with the previous two posters about you not giving us enough info on what the use is for. I do disagree to a certian extent on using only a semi auto for self defence. A good double action revolver is perfectly acceptable for self defence. Besides, Taurus and S&W making revolvers with more than Chambers makes the argument of capacity of ammo a mute argument.

This is a matter of opinion! Buy what you like, buy what you can afford or save for it!I agree, It depends on what it's use is for.A matter of preference.I say if you like your wheel gun (revolver) well enough to get another, go for it! If you would like to try a semi-auto now might be the time. I will say that I have had some pistols that I wish had back.Get what you feel you can handle and is going to be enjoyable to go shoot.GOOD LUCK

I have Revolvers and Pistols. If I could only have one, it would be the Pistol that I carry for CCW. I have killed more varmints with it than I have my hunting guns, due to the fact of always having it handy when I need it. If I carried a Revolver for CCW the same thing would apply.

Just a couple of things to consider...............

1. Do you shoot the revolver well?
2. Do you reload?
3. Do you like chasing brass?
4. Do you have a 22?
5. Do you like shooting a lot, but can't afford centerfire ammo by the case?

Is this helping? I think everyone should own a 22, auto or revolver. Autos are easier to clean, but some folks don't shoot them as well as they do a revolver. Whatever you buy, make sure it fits your hand, and the sights are sharp and easy to see. I'm still amazed how easy it is to burn up a brick of 22 ammo in an afternoon. But it's awful hard not to smile all the way home after you do!

Get a 22 revolver with near the same frame weight and dimensions as your 357. Shoot it a lot. It's cheap to shoot and all the practice will carry over to the centerfire.

I have a little Rossi 22 revolver, same as a J frame Smith and it gets shot a lot. Every time I switch over to the center fire's, in my case the 44 and 41 mags I'm a better shot for it.

When I was target shooting I shot both the 22 and centerfire events and all that 22 stuff helped me shoot the large bores.

This is the best thing you can do for your shooting. Look at the Smith model 17 for a companion piece to your 357. It's a K frame Smith chambered in 22 long rifle. Loads of fun for peanuts to shoot.

Seriously, what's it for? Firearms are a lot like golf clubs, they may all do some things very well, but they don't all do everything well.

Having a .22 to use for practice and casual plinking is great. If its like a S&W 317 or similar then it could also be a carry weapon for summer. (If you're out running, or other activity where normally a carry piece would be a burden.)

Would not recommend the 1911 for deer. You have a .357mag., I would go with a 44 special, or 44 mag. revolver for deer. The .44 mag will shoot .44 specials.

If you want an auto for deer, go with the Desert Eagle in .357 or .44 mag. .45ACP is not enough for deer.

I was down to one handgun some years ago. Picked a 6 inch S&W M19. Needed at least a 5 and 1/2 inch barrel in at least 357 mag power for hunting in the state I lived in then. Would get a 4 inch 357 today. The Ruger GP100 or S&W M686 would be about right. Of course the REAL all purpose handgun is a 4 inch M29/629 S&W. A proper M1911 with a 460 Rowland conversion for hunting would be a good auto choice. Add a 22 kit for practice.

I Have A 4 Inch 686.you Guys Think A 357 Is Good Enough For Med. Size Deer?they Do Get Petty Big In New York.what Load Would You Use For The 357and What Distance Is It Good For?ironhead Thanks For Yhe Info I Thought The 45acp Was Good Enough For Deer.how About A 10mm?

In my opinion I would stay away from the 45acp's and 10mm's. Those are very short cases that hold very little powder. Not enough for deer. The .357 is plenty of gun for deer. That and the .45LC is used mainly here in Ohio. We have some pretty big deer also. We can't go lower than .357mag. though. I can't help you on the loads. I don't shoot mine enough to reload yet. I do know you can shoot out to 100 yards and beyond with the .357mag on deer. Especially if it is scoped.

Sorry Gis I Didn't Realize You Said That About The 45cal.this Is My First Year With The 357,i Use A 58cal Blackpowder Gun So I Guess I'm Just Worried I Won't Have Enough ...
I Think Dessert Eagles Are Alittle To Expensive For My Blood, maybe I Can Find One Used.so If That Is The Case My Nexed Gun Might Just Be A 44 S&w Mag.it Doe's Have A Certain Sound To It.

A .45 ACP, like a Mod 625, is more than sufficient for deer sized animals. A 255 gr LSWC at 1100 fps is all you need and a reasonable dose of 2400 is all it takes to get it. :D

I show the 45ACP with a 240grainer going about 850fps. I am guessing your model 625 has about 7 1/2" barrel. That is where the 1100fps is coming from. The 1911 has a 5" barrel. If he had a deer about 75-100 yards out, he would never hit it with the 45ACP shot in a 1911, which is the gun he originally asked about. Not a good idea to take a 1911 out for deer hunting, unless you know you won't be shooting much past 15-20yds. The revolver is much better for deer.

Not really trying to argue, well maybe I am, but trying to be a little more humane for the deer. Thats why in the state I live in we use mainly shotguns. A 12 guage slug will shoot through both sides of a bullet proof vest. Just need JOE to know that a little bigger is better. The .357 or .44mag would be the best bet for what he is hunting.

For deer the BTB 185 has a good reputation. I would limit myself to the distance I can put 5 shots into a six inch group. The load for the 185 is in the Loadswap section. For deer I added a scope for best bullet placement. With the 357 its best to wait for a broad side shot. The 10mm with full loads like a 180XTP or 200XTP should work just as well as a 357 with the correct bullet placement.
