What's the better for un african hunter the .454 casull ou the .475 Linebaugh ? My favorite handgun 'll be a FA !

Both calibers are great, but .475 will penetrate more and used havier bullets. But in a FA .475 you are limited to use lighter bullet than in a custom Ruger dur to smaller cylinder in FA 83's guns.

The most commonly used heavy bullets in the 475's are the 420 to 425 grain LFN's and the 440 grain WFN's and they both work exceptionaly well in the Freedom guns with no loss of FPS

I don't like very much the Wfn design I prefer the LFN ones for accuracy and penetration. I have 2 FA and I'm limited with bullet weights because of size of cylinder. I've purchased special molds made by Ballistic cast for my FA .50 AE and my FA .454.

I have only fired .475 L made by John L. and all bullets on the market for .475 fit the oversize cylinder of John's work.

Hatari, welcome.

Think this is the first time I've seen two posts in a row, with both forum members from Belgium :D

Best of luck.... I would go with jwp475's advice, he has a bit of experience in the matter.

Let us know how your safari goes!

I hunt ervery years in Africa and I search a caliber for back-up and hunting, this handgun 'll be the friend of my rifle.
I hesitate between the .454 casull and the .475 Linebaugh !

If you want a revolver powerful enough to get the job done and realitively easy to shoot and practicle then the 454 is the way to go. If you are looking for the most horse power with the ability to produce a larger wound channel and the most penetration then the 475 is the clear choice of the two mentioned

What jwp475 said.

I got a chance to shoot a 500S&W, 475 Linebaugh, 454 Casull, and 460 Roland all inthe same day at the range.

[only the 454 was mine]

My wrists were screaming at the end. The 500 is nasty, but, its not unmanagable.

The 475 with 400(?) gr WFNGC LBT bullets were quite fierce. Nothing at all like the 480rugers I have shot in the past.

The 460 Rowland with 255gr RN was a handful for an auto. Made shooting a 50AE Desert Eagle seem tame.

And my lowly 454, well, I had fun and didn't feel "under gunned".
