Here's a couple of articles of Idaho news. I just can't believe folks venturing into the woods without sometype of sidearm.
Nampa man gets hunting privileges revoked for wasting moose
July 4, 2006 5:02 PM
The Associated Press
NAMPA, Idaho A Nampa man has been stripped of his hunting privileges for life for wasteful destruction of a trophy bull moose.
65-year-old Farrell Johnson pleaded guilty last month to the misdemeanor charge in an Idaho County court.
Prosecutors said Johnson had a valid permit when he shot the bull moose last November, but he violated the law when he left all but about 20 pounds of meat from the moose to rot. Moose generally yield several hundred pounds of meat.

Idaho man injured in bear attack
July 4, 2006 4:54 PM
The Associated Press
ST. ANTHONY, Idaho The Fremont County sheriff's office says an Idaho man was hiking on the Targhee Creek trail near Targhee Pass when he was attacked by a bear.
The 53-year-old man was alone when he came across a sow and her cub. The bear charged, and though the man rolled into the fetal position the bear bit him on the shoulder and hip before leaving the area.
The man managed to hobble away, meeting a group of horseback riders who lent him a horse so he could ride to where friends were waiting.
Police say he received medical attention at a clinic in West Yellowstone, Montana, but was not hospitalized. The man's name and hometown was not released.

Too bad about the moose, a couple hundred pounds of meat in the freezer can be a pretty handy thing to have.
I heard somewhere that the "play dead" thing isn't very effective with black bears, of course when we are talking about a momma with cubs all bets are off, he's lucky to be alive.

C@t@houl@ the only time I've ever thought I was in trouble near a bear was a sow with a cub. I never did see the cub, but the bear jumped on the young fella I was fishing with.
I think any animal that is higher on the food chain than I am deserves respect and I sure think that folks that walk around in their territory without any self defense besides playing dead is plain silly and just way to trusting for my taist.
Had a sow black bear come up the mountainside with two cubs as I was sitting on a deadfall monitoring a deer trail in the Aldo Leupold Wilderness in New Mexico some years back.
Was carrying a Rem 600 in .243 AI and prayed the bear wouldn't cross near me. As luck would have it, she moseyed up with a great big yellow pine tree between us. Came to within 12 yds or so, saw something on the log and screeched to a halt. Studied me for a while (I kept as motionless as a statue), half raised up and then back down, then sorta looked off at an angle for a bit.
I had the crosshairs centered right between her nostrils and prayed some more she wouldn't take another step in my direction. Felt very inadequate with the .243 AI in my hands, but it was better than a pocket full of rocks!
After what seemed an eternity, she got up and ambled off at a diagonal up the mountainside with the cubs following like pearls on a string. I sure didn't want to shoot the ol' gal and was mighty glad when she decided I wasn't anything to get upset about and moved on.

Unbelievable. Moose meat is excellent!
Yeah... when you are in the woods with stuff that can eat you.... puts a whole new perspective on life.

Numerous hunters get busted for wanton waste of meat (mostly moose and caribou) every year up here. A lot of hunters are just not aware of how big a moose can be and are totally unprepared for it.
The fine for wanton waste in Alaska is very expensive, as it should be.

Not talking about moose, but 15 or 20 years ago, a hunter asked dad if he could hunt quail in our field and dad said yes. I guess everybody and their dog thought it was ok to hunt in our field because they did. Later when the tenant worked the field, he said there were piles of rotting quail all over behind the terraces so dad has quit letting people hunt. He could not stand the waste.

Lots of private property now being closed because of the same types of thing. Just can't believe how some folks abuse the courtesy of landowners. Darn shame.

I just can't figure a 65-year-old wasting meat like that. Not that anyone younger would get a pass, but years of supposed wising up should prevent such action. He's getting his due.

There is just no excuse to hunting and leaving most of the animal behind to rot. I have shot many Elk, and it is a real problem at times getting the meat out. Actually I try to hunt where I can get my 4 wheel Surburban next to the game. It sure saves some back breaking lugging. About all I ever leave of an Elk are the hooves and internals.

Your seeing more and more cases like this, not just in hunting, but with younger folks damaging others property, petty and major theft, on and on.
I spent a bunch of years working in a State prison and dealt with a lots of folks that for some reason never understood why any sane sensible person would not take advantage of other folks or follow any laws if they were not forced to.
We read about and see this kind of behavior on a daily basis on TV, in our newspapers and on the streets where we live. Road rage, sports rage, children with no values, goals or role models are growing up around us and basically shaping the world to their ideas of right and wrong with no moral guidence. It's a heck of a world were seeing develop around us.
All I can say is every time we act morally, and teach our children and others that that kind of behavior is OK it's on the plus side. Every time we let our temper guide our behavior we teach those watching it's OK to behave that way.
There's nothing wrong with being a role model, but sometimes it's durn tuff. I can think of the times I've bitten my tunge when I wanted to vent but my son or grandkids were there watching me.
