View Full Version : Help with a 41 Mag load
Well I went out and shot my M58 today. I understand that this particular guns sights were regulated for a swaged 210gr SWC at about 1000fps. So therefore the REM Factory stuff I shot today shot lower that I understand, about 4" to be exact.
Here is my plight though, I want to use this gun as a secondary firearm when I go bear hunting this season. So what I am looking for is some advice on a load that some would think would bring point of impact back to roughly zero at 25yds and be suitable for use on Black Bear.
By the way what a blast that was shooting that thing. I could feel the overpressure from the muzzle blast on face. The Mrs was saying that every time I fired she could see a big flame come out of the barrel. I aked her if she wanted to shoot it, she said no way I am not shooting that thing

Increasing bullet weight might do the trick. That would both increas recoil and slow the bullet's exit (but the required reduction in vel. for the heavier bullet) until the barrel had rotated farther up.
Had an old 210gr. HBWC mold for the .41mag.(yeah...they made them back when the .41mag. was new and they though it might become a big police seller). By making differnt hollow base stems, could make bullets up to 275gr. In general, the heavier the bullet, the higher the POI (and the heavier the felt recoil).
And lucky for you, are on the web-site of the best cast bullets i've tried (including myown). One of these is certainly worth a try:
http://www.beartoothbullets.com/bulletselect/index.htm
I've been using 225 gr gas checked SWC bullets with 18.1 gr Hll0 and WLP's.
Have also used 232 gr gas checked SWC's with 19.0 gr IMR4227 and WLP's.
My hunting loads have been 170 gr Hornady JHP's with 11.3 gr IMR4756 amd WLP's.
Don't know how the cast would work, but the JHP's sure work great on mountain lions! :D

Your post does not indicate if you reload your own ammo or not? As this thread is in the handgun ammunition section, I would give the Federal Castcore load a try. It is the only factory load I am aware of that shows much promise as bear load. Handloads for the .41 really are the way to go! Check out Load Swap for a few suggestions if you reload.

ooopps, sorry about that I do relod. I was thinking of possibly a 220-230gr bullet. unfortunately the M58's have fixed sights so I am thinking if anything try a bullet in that weight range since I want to use the gun for bear. I am thinking that will bring the impact up at 25yds. I am also thinking of a velocity of around 1000-1100fps, however I don't really know where to begin. So I was hoping that you fellas could point me in the right direction.

Fixed sightsX Fixed bullet weightX fixed velocity = point of aim does not compute here! I would need to change at least one of the four! Bullet weight and velocity are all that you have as a "variable". It is the "bear load" part of this this that needs to be thought out. Most commercial loads address animals with eyes on the side of their heads? The .41 Mag is capable of much more than that! As a handloader you will find that to be true.

Still have an old Mod. 57 that I've had for many years (and managed to salvage recently from floodwaters...a little ugly now, a few slight rough spots in the bore, but still functional and accuate).
Data changes over the years, and the load I use probably isn't sanctioned any more. But I still use it...through friends who supply me with old lots of 2400, haven't had a single problem. IF the load were to accelerate wear, you'd think I'd have had some clue in the last 20years or so.
So I still use the old Lyman #410610...but I lapped the gas check base off of it years ago when finding .41 gas checks just becasme too much trouble. Haven't missed the gas check; plain based seems to work just as well. Still using 18.5gr. of 2400 and getting 1255fps from that 4" barrel. Case life has been excellent.
Doubt I'll change...and a friend recently gave me an unopened square metal pop-top (still sealed) can of 2400, so I'll be loading that same load at least until that can runs out.
NO....I'n not recommending ignoring curent loading data. Am recommending that once you've found something that works without any problems, you not change it.

Only variables you can play with are vel. and bullet weight. SLOWING the load will proably make it shoot a bit higher...but how slow will you go and still feel comfortable with? Going to a heavier bullet weight at the same speed will also make the gun shoot a bit higher, and keep the energy up to respectable levels as well.
---
Decided some time ago that anything I'll shoot with a handgun can be well-shot with a .41mag. Are more powerful guns...and less...but it seemed then (and now) the best combination of size, weight, power, and control.

I've killed a bunch of black bear with both the 41 and the 44 with cast bullets, 210 grain plain base in the 41 and 255 gas check hardcast in the 44 and darned if I can tell the difference. Both whack the dickens out of any bear I've shot out to a hundred yards or better.
I've shot nothing but Kieth style hard cast after not having a lot of luck with jacketed bullets in the 41 and 44 in the mid 60's.
All my loads out of both calibers ran around 1250 to 1350 fps. Had a 6.5 inch S&W 29 and 4 inch 57 then went to a 7.5 inch Super Redhawk and a 5 inch Redhawk. All performed with no problems. Now have a Taurus Stainless 41 mag Tracker with a four inch tube, but havn't killed anything with this gun but some targets and pop cans.
All these loads are either with 2400 or Blue dot powder. One thing for sure the porting on the light Tracker really helps.
That 58 will make a nice bear gun as soon as you find a load that lets you shoot point of aim.

I would like to add that I think Federal Cartridge deserves a big "atta boy" for thier introduction of the .41 mag Castcore load. I have not tried it because I handload. For those that don't, I recomend that you give it a look.
