How do you choose the size (dia) you need for reloading cast bullets for the 1885 low wall rifle with a .429 bore?

I size my 429421's to .430 for my Red hawk which has a .429 bore. Well it did 20 years ago. The .430's still shoot quite well. Better than I can hold it.

Mr. Stanton could probably tell you what size and why. It has to do with obtruation or some big word like that. :D

In general, size .001" to .002" larger than bore size. Bigger is better, as long as throats don't cause chambering problems. In revolvers, the cylinder throats may be smaller than the bore, which causes leading and poor accuracy. The boolit is actually sized down while passing through the throat resulting in an undersized (and deformed) boolit.

seems like when it slams into the rifling that it would swage back up

They do, with enough pressure behind them. But it's best if they start out fitting the cylinder throats.... less gas blow-by, and leading.
