Well, I finally did it. I sent my 454 SRH to Ruger.
I could not figure out what was causing the accidental discharges. I did discover that I had zero cylinder-barrel gap on one chamber and .006-.007 on the opposite chamber.
To me, this says;either the cylinder face is cut crooked, or the cylinder is wobbling in the frame. Either way, it is a factory problem.
I called their service dept and they told ME to send it by UPS. After some rather terse discussion, they agreed to send me a waybill to ship it at their expense. (I explained how much it hurt when a SRH, traveling at 30 mph, hits you in the face).
I guess I will find out personally how good Ruger's service is.
Anyone here have experi-ence with Ruger?

I think you are angry? Not enough information in your post. It is difficult to have an AD with a double action revolver.
Sent a Redhawk back to them years ago in regard to light primer strikes. It came back with the same problem. Sent it back again and it came back the same.
In the end, I fixed it myself. It is now my favorite.
All of this was near 20 years ago. 30 rounds went down range today without a hitch.

I was shooting single action. The gun went off when I released the hammer.
At first I thought i had screwed up and had my finger on the trigger.
I had fired about 50 rounds through it when it occured. It was starting to get dirty and the cylinder was starting to drag . I was having to exert more force on the hammer to bring the tight cylinder into battery.
I admonished myself for carelessness, and kept shooting while wiping the blood off my chin. After about six more rounds, it happened again. This time I was ready and did not get hit again. I still thought it might be me, so I cursed my stupidity and kept shooting. After the third time, I quit for the day.
The next weekend, after a thourough cleaning, I tried it again, this time shooting .45 Colts.
After about 30 rounds, it happened aghain. It took two more AD's before I could believe it was happening. After a thorough inspection of the sear and it's notch in the hammer I decided it was ok. That's when I noticed the disparity in the barrel-cylinder gap. Cleaning this surface stopped the AD's for about 30 more rounds, then it happened again. That's when I called Ruger.
I always thought that the transfer bar would not come into play until the trigger was pulled. WRONG!!In single action, it rises when the hammer is cocked. If you let go of the hammer, it will fire. I think the extra drag is causing the sear to fail to come fully into place, thus letting the hammer fall when released. BANG!!
This thing is such an A$$- kicker, I'm not sure if I will ever trust it again..LOL

It is a good thing they send the paper to ship it UPS because UPS will not ship guns UNLESS you have a contrat with them. They refuse to ship for us litle guys.

Jim, have you tried shipping from a UPS hub, or from a UPS store? The UPS store here told me that UPS would not ship handguns from here.
Luckily, I am stubborn and went to UPS themselves. They are only open from something like 11:00 AM til 12:30 PM. The guy there said they won't accept guns from the stores, but no problem at their counter.

They refuse to ship for us litle guys. :mad:About three years ago, I shipped my Cimarron Model P back to Texas via UPS or Fed Ex, can't recall which one it was. Anyway, one or the other will ship overnight express, as long as they see some green. What irritates me is that it has to be overnight express for handguns. Seems their employees have sticky fingers so they want the package moved ASAP. THEY have a pilferage problem and WE get stuck with having to pay for it.
snowtigger: sounds like you have a bent ejector rod. Let us know what was wrong with it.

My friend had a new 45 Colt Blackhawk with the interchangable cylinders. It would put 45 Colt loads thru a target sidewise at 25 feet new out of the box.
He sent it to Ruger and they rebarreled it and put in a few other new parts. It now shoots fine. Turnaround was about six weeks. No complaints.

P89 fired until the slide was so loose it sounded like a baby's rattle. Still functioned ok though. Sent it back and they returned it with a new upper that was snug and slick as
goose ...
5 weeks
no complaints
My repair experience with Ruger was only one time. Turnaround was seven weeks. But, don't feel to bad. I just packaged my NIB S&W custom auto for shipment back to the factory. Personally, for me, the last three NIB Smith handguns I've purchased ALL went back for service. I consider anyone who buys a new gun and has no problems is lucky. Ruger will fix it, but it is frustrating. With a shipping label, UPS won't question the delivery. MAYBE!

I shipped several firearms just a few weeks ago, both handguns and long guns. UPS said their offical company policy is they will not ship firearms. When I questioned how it was I was still receiving firearms from my suppiers (I am a licensed dealer) they said there are some shippers who have exclusive contrats with UPS and they can ship firearms, but no one else. I shipped my guns FEDX.
Kinda like asking the same questions at the post office, Jim - depends on who's working the counter as to what answer you get. I've read posts here on the board from folks that even took copies of the policies in and read them to the employees and still couldn't make headway with them.
Here's a follow up to my statement...With a shipping label, UPS won't question the delivery. MAYBE!
Just returned from the locally managed UPS store. The employee told me I had to break the gun down for shipment. Never had to in the past and we argued over me doing it today. I didn't and he rudely grabbed my box and readied it for shipment. Not sure, but maybe FedX employees are better trained in the shipment policies regarding firearms. Actually, the best way to ship is through a FFL dealer. They can ship via the USPS. Private unlicensed citizens cannot.
Good Luck! It's an adventure.

Well, I just learned one thing about Ruger Service. I called , just trying to find out any progress and got an answering service.
It seems if they ALL go on vacation from July 24th to Aug 4. This leaves the shop closed until they return. What a way to run a railroad!!!!

That sounds like a bad problem. The transfer bar is connected to the trigger which means the trigger is hanging up allowing the hammer to hit the firing pin. Not safe. Please let us know how they fixed the problem.

only the 24th to the 4th? heck, thats nothing, our gun club is buying a new trap, we were looking for a GMV superstar, but they were kinda hard to find, seems the factory in sweden closes down for a whole month. Actually from a managerial stand point, it makes sense, send all of your employees on vacation at the same time, that way you don't have to cover for guys who are out, and if you need to do any upgrades or preventative maintainence, you do it while every thing is shut down. Sucks to be the customer though

Just an update; I called Ruger's service department this morning. They told me my gun was at the test range. Barring any problems' it will be shipped next week.
The problem is; I am leaving on a hunting trip on Friday, so there will be no one to receive the package. The rep said she will inform the tech's and they will call on Monday. I sure hope they can ship it Mon, so I will have it before I leave. I probably won't take it hunting, but I would hate to see it left on my porch for two weeks. UPS isn't so reliable when it comes to getting that "adult signature".
The saga continues.....

Had a minor problem w/ my Blackhawk and they fixed it fine, in short turn around.
Only problem was they also "fixed" my custom tuned trigger back to factory specs. Now it's heavy and grabby, just like a RUger trigger is meant to be!

I had some problems with a 10/22 (firing pin was all mangled resulting in misfires). I called them. They offered a new firing pin. At the time I was not confident enought to take apart the bolt and replace only the firing pin. So they sent me a hole new bolt Assy and I sent the original one back to them. Can't remember who paid the return shipping, but good costomer service if ya ask me.

It's finally here!!Looks Good. Has even Barrel to cylinder gap all the way around. They say they fixed the barrel, crane, hammer dog and trigger. They replaced the hammer and the pawl. Also one spring.
I don't have time to try it right now. The boat is loaded and moose season is already 12 hours old...
Will try it out when I get back...

That is good news ST. There must be some kind of tax write off for fixing them rather than building right to begin with?
A question for ya; Did they ship it to you clean or dirty?

Actually, I have four Rugers, and this is the first problem I've ever had. I think they worked on every part that could concievably be related.
The gun is a lot cleaner than it was when I sent it to them. It would only AD when it got dirty and I wanted them to be able to duplicate the problem.
The trigger feels like someone knew what they were doing. Best factory trigger I've ever felt on a Ruger. My .44 SRH feels better, but I have about 20,000 rounds through it.
