View Full Version : Inside diameter of brass shells?

Gentlemen,

Dealing with this oversized (backbored) barrel on my shotgun got me to thinking (scary).

Does anyone know, or can you measure if you have some, the inside diameter of brass 12ga shells. I would imagine it has to be bigger than a plastic hull due to the thinner brass walls.

Just imagineering and rambling, but I think these might be able to hold a slug or RB that is closer to bore diameter in a backbored gun.

Just curious.

Thanks

Fired case is running .773"...kind of large, but don't have any unfired/sized cases (and these go in and out of a SXS 12ga. just fine).

May be a good time to mention the doubtful "extra" strength of Brazilian brass shells. The base is so thin, can read the mirror image of the headstamp from the inside. Will stand normal 12ga. loads, but Id not push them to the magnum level.

Thanks Ribbonstone, my bore runs about .775".

HUMMMMM..........

Might be able to load a bore diameter RB or slug in thoses kind of cases.

SSB, not familiar with that Moss you have...will barrels for the 500 fit it? If so, I have a slug bbl I don't use that would save you alot of grief.

Mark,

No the 835 will not take 500 barrels, different design.

I'm looking to be able to shoot a slug or RB load out of my shot barrel for targets of opportunity while hunting with shot.

OK, missed that part along the way....

Been thinking about this and I believe you have an easy cure, just didn't hit me right off.

You can shoot a smaller than bore size ball w/o hassle. Get a ball big enough to fit snug, but not tight inside a plastic wad shot cut while it's in the hull. Select the proper powder charge and seat your plastic wad over it. Spoon in a bed of corn meal (I prefer Indian Head brand as a buffer because it is a fine soft grind). Drop your unpatched ball into the wad then cover with more corn meal and tap the hull to settle it all around the ball.

When you fire the round, the wad will hold the ball centered even when it goes into the bigger diameter bore, the wad will expand pushing against the ball and the corn meal will follow suit squashing down and out to fill the voids.
