Gentlemen,

I have a 20 year old Model 29 S.& W. with an 8-3/8" bbl. I would like to change this to a 6" bbl., but, cannot get S.& W. to talk to me about the conversion. Is this worth the time, money and effort, or should I just buy anohter 44?

If you can find a 6" barrel, I don't see any reason why a good smith can't fix you up. No need to go to S&W with it. Call around and see if a gunsmith in your area might have a 6" barrel laying around where he just replaced someone elses. Like you, some change their minds later and like a different barrel length. If you have trouble finding one, let me know and I can check with the gunsmith I used to work with. He has built many cutom barrelled S&W's and might have an old barrel laying around.
