A newbie here....I read through most of the posts and it appears that the 280gr. bullet appears to be the top pick. I shoot a Ruger Super Readhawk at 7.5". Since I load my own I have the flexibility changinging my loads but I have yet to find powder loading data for a 280gr. lead bullet. I load mostly with Hodgdon Universal. TiteGroup, and H110.

Thanks in advance for your response.

Have you checked www.loadswap.com? They have a listing for H110 in there. I think its around 22 grains.

No I didn't. Thanks for the heads-up on loadswap.

Yup, that sounds about right. I put one of the Bearooth 280gr. WFNGCs through a small whitetail with that bullet / load.... it didn't go far.

Best of luck, and welcome to the forum.

I do not shoot that heavy a bullet in my 44 magnums for deer as most very seldom do heavier than 175 pounds. This is my favorite load for whitetail deer in either my Ruger Super Redhawk or Super Blackhawk:

CASE: W-W 44 mag.

PRIMER: CCI-350 Mag. Pistol

POWDER: W-296 / 24.0gr.

BULLET: Remington 240 gr. JHP.

VELOCITY: 1,600 - 1,700 fps. depending upon which gun I shoot.

COMMENTS: I have taken no less than ten deer with the above load and so far, all shots have been one shot kills...

Thanks for all the replys.

DAW...does W-296 call for a mag primer? Just curious since most of my mag loads with Hog powder call for a standard LP primer.

Yes..... or use Winchester primers (I do), which are a 'one size fits all.'

I've used CCI-350s, too, no problems.

Ruger Guy.....i have used a 240 grain Sierra hollow cavity jacketed bullet with a good dose of 2400 powder behind the bullet.

The load is a near MAX load of 19.5 grains of 2400 powder,

19.8 being MAX OK.

This load makes that Sierra bullet expand a bunch and puts a quarter size hole clean through a buck at 45 yards. LIke you shot the deer with a 20 gauge slug instead.

I've had better consistency with Speer 240grain Gold Dots with Alliant 2400 powder. I'm shooting a Ruger carbine though, and I think that 2400 does better in the longer 18.5" barrel

I just loaded 100 round of 240 XTP over 24.5g H110 and CCI 350 primers. They shoot good out of my Rossi rifle, have not tried them in my SBH. I recoverd three bullets out of my 50 yar backstop and was plesently pleased at how the did not totaly explode they were flat but held togeather, although the werea few peices of lead missing. The damage would not be anywhere this severe to an animal. you may want to give them a try.

I'm gonna put in another vote for the 240gr XTP. I load mine with 2400 and CCI primers. Every deer I've shot with this combo has had a good sized exit hole.

For my 1894, I have found Marshall's 250gr. Keith bullet over 22.gr of H110 to be a great deer killer too.

I've heard that 240 or 250 is actually as heavy as you want to go for .44 Mag. If you go heavier you start to lose alot of velocity for the small gains in sectional density. If you want to go heavier than .44 mag you need a wider caliber.

I have the same problem, I can't find any loading info for this bullet using A2400. Can anyone help? Thanks

that is not nessecarly true, I have loaded the JDJ 327 grain bullet to 1337Fps out of a 5 1/2" barreled Redhawk. For factroy loads these were copied from Buffalo Bore's web site:

305 gr. L.B.T.- L.F.N. (1325 fps / M.E. 1189 ft. lbs.

340 gr. LBT-LFN GC . (1478 fps / M.E. 1649 ft. lbs.)

Hi All,
I shoot the 320 LBT out of my SRH. This has been a great load for Deer, Elk, Moose and Bear out to around 150 yards. WLR, WW, AND V V N110. Start with 22 grains and work your way up from there.I have a load that work great in a 1894 and that is 240 gr XTP and 16.5 gr of HS 6.

For those seeking a load using the BTB 44-280gWFN bullet either PB or GC, using Alliant 2400, here's a proven recipe.

BTB 44-280gWFN/17.6g Alliant 2400/WLP Primer/Straline or Remington Brass

This load is not absolutely a max load, but is well into the efficiency envelope for this powder, and delivers VERY uniform ballistics. This load should generate about 1300 fps +/- out of a 7.5" barrel revolver.

Hope this helps!

God bless,

24.5 grs of H110 behind a 240 gr bullet seems pretty high. That has got to be one hot load. I use H110 behind my 240's and 300's. The max that I have run 21.5 grs behind a 240. I am shooting a Ruger Redhawk - 44 mag - 7 1/2" brl.

I have use 300 gr xtp with 19.5 grns of H110 on a 250 lb wild boar at 35 yds. Total devistation. The bullet did not exit due to shot placement, just behind right shoulder. The right sheild of the hog was shattered and the bullet was recovered in the left sheild. Whet gutting the hog, it looked as if he swallowed a hand granade. His insides were liquid. Needless to say he dropped in his tracks.
