Hello Folks -

I recently purchased a Rock River AR-15 in a varmint configuration. I want to exchange the A2 buttstock with a collapsible M4 carbine one. I want to be able to modify the LOP between when I shoot it and when my wife shoots it.

Anyone one who has attempted to remove the stock A2 buttstock must know where I am going. It looks like it takes a tremendously broad and thick screwdriver, and just some preliminary efforts with the largest one I had reveal that the screwhead is part metal, part butter. I'm going to need a driver that fits perfectly I believe.

I emailed RRA and the reply words were "Here we will use an appropriate screwdriver and receiver block. There is no special tool". I did not get any feedback on what that 'appropriate' screwdriver is.

To someone like myself who has a tool collection only surpased by those who make their living by them, it is special! Just because it is appropriate does not mean it not special. I purchased the broadest, thickest driver I could find at Lowe's and it is still not snugly fitting.

This should not be rocket science; what type of screwdriver is required and where can I get one?

I appreciate your comments in advance.

Best,

Luisyamaha

Buy a small chisel or two and grind to a tight fit. Turn it with a crescent wrench or vice grip pliers.
BTW, if it is that tight, a receiver block may be in order.

Thanks - I ended up meeting your suggestion half way - I did find a screwdriver at Home Depot that while not entirely snug, was even bigger than the one from Lowe's. Using a pair of vise grips clamped at 180 degrees from each other on the shaft (fortunately the shaft of the drive was nice and square), and having a friend hold the receiver, it worked like a charm. There was no way I think I would have had the torque trying to twist the drive by the handle.

Cheers,
