OK gentlemen, I have an urge to sell my Desert Eagle and maybe some of my other toys to get my Super BlackHawk chambered in .510GNR. My question is : Does anybody have any experience with this round? Im curious to hear some stories about it.

I had Reeder custom guns build me one of their Ult. Black Widows several years ago in 500 Linebaugh. Built from a Bisley Blackhawk. At the time Gary Reeder was developing the 510 GNR which is a shortened 500 Linebaugh case. His comment at the time was to call back when the development was finished and order some brass for my Linebaugh. The advantage is the ability to download the 510 with a 350g bullet and a reduced load. This load makes a great whitetail load. The case can also be loaded to 1300fps using the 435-450g bullets providing all the stopping power needed for anything in North America. Personally, it about all the load I would ever want to shoot thru my 5 1/2 in barrelled Widow.
Its kinda like the 480 Ruger round vs the 475 Linebaugh if your only going to shoot full house loads why bother with the 480. I shoot both and cannot tell any difference when shooting top end loads thru both the 510 and 480. Its really a matter of choice, now that I'm in Kansas and not Idaho, I really don't have a use for the big loads and am very happy with the ability to download for the suitable game found here. As a final note the 510 is commerical loaded and available in 3 loadings.

I currently have a set of dies sitting here in front of my for the .510 that Gary Reeder is building me. Its stated that the .510 can do more than the .500 Linebaugh due to the fact that you can safely load it down to around .50special without fear of detonation, or up to some monster .500 Linebaugh specks with the .435 grain round availible. So basically, what kind of performance has your .500 Linebaugh provided you with on deer sized game? Im sure complete penetration within 100 yards, but what does it do to them? Anchor them on the spot with massive hydrostatic shock, or does it just whizz on through resulting in some tracking time? Shot placement accordingly of course.

One might as well be swatting flys with a baseball bat, the only load I have tried on whitetail was a 435g loaded to 950 fps (as light as I dared to go) 1/2 in hole in, 1/2 in hole out not nearly as much shock and tissue damage as a 240g 44 mag XTP at 1300. My opinion of the 500 Linebaugh is that its made for big stuff where pentration is important, ie bufflo, moose, neighbors cat, etc. I actually bought the gun for a packing gun in bear country while bow hunting, ie the 5 1/2 in barrel and iron sights, the only bullets I shoot are the 435-450 grainers at 1300 fps and I will admit its all I can handle in the recoil dept. I am however thinking of using it on hogs with the 510 case and 350g bullets. My first handgun kill on whitetail was made with my FA 454 loaded to 1700 fps+ and a 300g XTP, the front sholders made great burger and you didn't even have to grind them.
I think the 510 is a really great choice for all around hunting but I would go for the V rear and bead front sight system or scope the gun as my eyes won't let me shoot much past 25 yds with mine.

That sight setup is exactly what I ordered. I dont plan on going out much past 50 yards with the iron sights, maybe 100 with a scope. My first handgun kill on a whitetail was with a .50AE Desert Eagle. I used plain jane 350 grain PSP bullets from Magnum Research. It just zipped right on through with little damage. How is that Freedom Arms 454? I have to imagine that pistol has quite the kick to it.

I bought the gun new in 1992 and have been firing it ever since. I grew up shooting a superblack 44 mag using the old super-vel loads and just flat shot it apart. Mr H. Bowen rebuilt the gun for me(at 3x the price I paid for it) and it now shoots only light loads. When I bought the 454 I chose the same 7 1/5 in barrel length topped it with a Leupold scope and mounts. The 260 g FA bullets at 2000 fps are just way to much to handle, the gun not only has an extreame muzzle flip but also torques in the hand. I tried their recommended load using a 300g FA bullet and finely settled on 30g of H110 and a 300g XTP bullet which chronos at 1650-1700 fps from my gun. I have shot under 3 in groups at 100 yds with that combo. Recoil is not as bad as my 4 in S&W 44 mag with 1300 fps 270g gold dot loads. I also have the rubber pachmayers on mine which I like better, my friend has the preimer verson with hard grips which he like better, that is simply personal choice. Although I have hunted elk for 3 seasons with it I have never been able to get a shot into one so I don't know if the XTP will hold up or not. I simply goes thru whitetails. I suppose the best way to sum up recoil is its heavy when shooting paper or sighting in, but you don't feel a thing when shooting game. Pretty much works that way with all my guns. I'm thinking the perfect gun might be Reeders 410GNR lots of power less recoil.
