What is it about this weapon that it has no real
popularity among shooters?

One would that most any Smith would have
some following!

Well, their trigger pull isnt all that great, and I personally think that they arent very accurate due to that. They have a mile of take up before the trigger breaks and it gets harder to pull as it goes. Their trigger mechanism was under legal scrutiny by Glock when they first came out due to the similarities, but they arent near the same as far as feel. I dont remember any failure to feeds, or that it had poor ergonomics, just that it had a horrible trigger and I couldnt hit anything with it.

Was working at a local gun shop the summer they really started hitting the shelves....and die hard S&W fans were the first to buy them....and the first to start complaining about the trigger pull/accuracy issues. Really, they aren't that bad...but they are not as good as many other DAO guns on the market. The crappy finsih on the first ones didn't help a bit (some with thin spots...some with "runs"...some with thick areas that partially covered slide markings).

They didn't sell well...even when offered a single sale dealer discount (guess the idea was to get them in the shop onwer's hands) it didn't seem to help things.

That little pot-metal .380 they put out at the same time probably didn't help things.

Think S&W buyers expect a long working life from a S&W product, better quaility of finish, and better over-all construction (although S&W sold a good number of thier little 22A .22 Semi-Autos).

I've looked at later ones...much better effort...but by then, the handgunning public had pretty much made up it's mind. "Sigma" became "Smegma" to most hard-core S&W fans.
------
Speaking of which...revolvers...I don't much care for more than 6 holes poked in a cylinder, barrels with full length lugs or ribs, and plastic bead sights....but they seem to be able to sell them, so what do i know.

I have a 40ve, second gen in .40. I am really happy with the gun, but the trigger is long and stiff. I bought this gun because it was cheap, around $300.

It did teach me trigger control. If it had a 5lb trigger it would be an awsome gun. The ergonomics are great, unlike the glock 23.

It is identical to the 23 in almost every aspect.

just from stuff I've read on forums, the VE models are the only ones worth having. the rest jam, ain't accurate and the triggers apparently suck.

The trigger deffinately isn't the guns strong point. You can remove 2 of the 3 springs on the trigger and that will soften the pull. Some people have reliability issues after this, some don't. I did, so I put it back to stock and figured I would just learn to shoot.

Started shooting so much that I had to learn to reload so I could afford my habbit.

As far as accuracy, it's pretty **** good, if you can control the trigger.

I ahve the VE Series in 9mm and it is very reliable. The trigger pull is long, but not any worse than the double action revolvers I have. Feels much better than the Glock. The trigger is the only negative I have with mine and it is getting better with time.

I own a SW9VE. The trigger takes some getting used to but once you do, it's quite accurate and very dependable. I've put about 1000 or so rounds through it with no failures of any kind. I consider the harder trigger as a safety feature for a CCW. I know that when I pull that trigger it will be because I intend too. It is my principal car gun, one of my home defense weapons and a inexpensive to shoot range gun. And on top of that it's not too ugly! ;)
I've heard the Sigma is S & W's top selling pistol with little or no promotions. I'm a S & W fan. Just bought a S & W MP40 that I really like also.

My opinion,
Sigmas are interesting collectibles, but not that outstanding at the end.
Dito with brushedchrome !
Had the bad idea to have the 380 at some time, whow was like the worst i saw, even some worse eastern block were better (sorry if i hurt someone).
Next Sigmas were somewhat better, but still no good buy.
Chapter closed on that, but not so for the rest of S&W, a wonderful 1911, good traditional semiautos and the best "affordable" revolver line, yet.

I have a .40ve and I like it. Only other gun to compare it to is a S&W 686 revolver so not really fair.

The trigger is much stronger than the revolver but if you shoot it a lot you get used to it. It is quite accurate for me as far as my shooting skills go.

What sold me on that gun was the price and how well it fit my hand in the store.
