This isn't in my neck of the woods, but a Great Horned Owl, we think, caught a fox right in my yard.

I hit one with my truck crossing the Mississippi River about three in the morning a few years ago. I'd been driving for more than ten hours and was pretty woozy til me and that bird met. It looked like somone had done in the windshield with a 12 gauge. Sure was wide awake after that. them big owls are sure a good sized animal.

That looks more like a Golden Eagle to me.

Get a load of the magpie(?) in full afterburner, just trying to get outta Dodge. . .

What are the carcasses? Are they deer? Sheep, maybe? And was the guy in the talons (fox?) feeding on the carrion? Didn't know foxes did that.

Was the photographer in a blind? Great picture, in any case.

Great picture, I saw a bald eagle do the very same thing with a fox but didn't quite get him that high off the ground.

Mr Magpie's got more brains. That appears to be a golden eagle. If the fox survived it'll think three or four times before hitting a carcass in the open ever again.

That is one great picture,
I'm saving that one.
I watched a hawk swoop down and pick up a rattlersnake once. Once he gained altitude, he dropped the snake cause the snake kept striking him. It was all too fast to get a good picture of the event.

Great photo! Could have been on a trap line bait. Definitely looks like a Golden Eagle to me, but I think Jack might have been refering to another similar incident in his yard. We have had quite a variety of birds of prey on the lake, but mostly Bald Eagles. It's a treat to see the Golden.

I guess I should explain my first post a little better, as I was in a hurry when I posted and never got back to expand on it. It's an immature Golden Eagle by the look of it.

Now about the owl. A few winters ago I found a packed down area of snow on the way out to the woodshed. It looked like someone had taken a pillow and punched it down in the snow multiple times over a 12-15 foot diameter area. The only real clue was four swipes in the snow just outside the packed area. Wingtip of a large bird?

I gave a buddy who's a better bushman than I am a holler. We found fox tracks coming from a bush 200 yards away. It looked like the fox broke into a run 30 yards from the woodshed, got cut off just before it got to the open door and headed down my track to the house. The battle took place about 30 yards up the track. There was a smaller packed down area about 50 yards off towards the bush. No tracks going in or out.

We figured it was a Great Horned Owl, as it was March, way too early for eagles up here.
