Help! I made a trade with a friend for a 1915 Danzig Mauser.
It came in a bag of parts. Both the bolt and action were stripped. The bolt has been forged down so I inserted it into the action. BIG mistake! Now the bolt is stuck with the bolt nose about 3/4'' past the clip stripper slot, it can move back and forth about 1/8th".

Can I fix it (with your held) or does it need a real gunsmith?

Thanks Brad

Does the bolt have the extractor ring still on it? If so it may have rotated. Just reach in and rotate it till it lines up with the extactor notch.

If the extractor collar is on the bolt, as above, and the extractor not installed, that is surely the problem. Being turned probably isn't the cause, but being sprung open into the safety lug recess is. If the bolt sleeve (the part that screws into the back of the bolt) is installed, remove it, then look into the right locking lug raceway (or possibly left depending on how the collar was oriented). You should see the lugs that the extractor mounts on. Put a small screwdriver into the raceway under the collar lugs and compress the lower toward the upper which will contract the collar. While holding it compressed pull the bolt out.

There is never a reason to remove the extractor collar from the bolt, unless it needs to be replaced, but never insert the bolt without the extractor!

OH NO! "There is never a reason to remove the extractor collar from the bolt, unless it needs to be replaced, but never insert the bolt without the extractor!" That is just what I've done. Have I totaly wrecked it!

Thanks
Brad

this happened to me once when I went to lap in the recoil lugs. I took the extractor off and the bolt stuck. I simply had a friend squeeze the collar back together with a small needle nose plier, then I took a length of small diameter wire and wrapped around the attachment flanges where the extractor mounts.

you can put it back on if you are careful about it. you just can't do it over and over. just like bending a paper clip back and forth til it breaks.

Mr. Thopson:

Thanks for your help. I think my problem is worse than you think. The locking lugs are covered by the rear bridge & the bolt can not be moved more than 1/8th in back or forth. There are no parts on the bolt.

Is The Bolt Stop Still In Your Receiver ?

The action is stripped bare. The bolt stop is in a little box of parts I got with the action.

are there any holes drilled and tapped in the receiver that maybe has a set screw or a scope mount screw that is interfering with the bolt body?

No holes. There seems to be something on the bottom of the action just in front of the triger pin hole that has camed up into a recess in the bolt.

i'm at work , so i'm having a tough time keeping up here. I went to the top of the page and opened up the "Gun Nuts " link. you can click on that and get an exploded view of the 98 Mauser and then magnify it.i'm not sure if this is the same as your Danzig or not

i'm assuming that the receiver is completely stripped? no trigger group in it, no magazine box or parts, no screws protruding, or springs?

OH JOY! You guys were right, the "extractor collar" was still attached. With a bright light & some 3X cheaters I saw it, moved into alignment and VOLA with a gentle pull the bolt slid out.

So now it's off for a new .358 Winchester barrel, & a forward mounted scope.

Thanks to all of you for your help!
