Hey all,

Quick question. I have a Remington 700 that I'm quite happy with except for the annoying j-lock (aka wart, ISS). I would like to remove the j-lock. I know that I can buy an entire firing pin assembly and accomplish this. BUT, could I simply replace the bolt shroud with a non ISS shroud and everything work fine? Replacing just the bolt shroud would be cheaper and my only goal is to get rid of the wart so it's my preferred idea if it's possible and safe. Any advice you can offer on the topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I believe that replacing the shroud is the procedure, check out www.brownells.com for replacement parts

I think it was Hollands gun site I went to and ordered the complete replacement bolt shroud/pin assembly for my Rem 700 .375 RUM a yr or so back. Real easy job. Cost was around 50 bucks I believe. If you cannot locate them give me a pm and I will research that for you.

good luck.

Thanks a lot Grizz. I will look into that. I expected to need to replace the whole assembly but figured I'd see if the cheap was was possible :)

I share your frustration w/ that stupid lock. But I got past it on the cheap. I just blacked out all the red on it.

THought was that it would be temporary fix until I could get another pin/shroud on eBay. But, after a few weeks, I didn't even notice the stupid thing anymore. It's not visible, unless I really look for it, and I've tossed out the stupid little tools that came with the rifle that lock it.

I've used the rifle considerably this spring and summer building loads, and I've given up on spending the extra bucks to replace the shroud. If I do replace it in the future, I'd get a lighter firing pin too, so I'd gain more than merely cosmetics.

Typically that would be an excellent plan. The problem is that I have the 700 stainless and the shroud is stainless so the black wart stands out like a sore thumb. I don't care for the gold tint on the XCRs so I tore the world up looking for a "new old stock" BDL stainless, which I luckily found for a decent price. I must admit that I'm already getting used to it though. I'll probably get rid of the wart eventually with a new assembly, but I'm not in the hurry I was. Maybe if I weren't so anal I wouldn't care at all! Thanks for the input..

I see your problem... all the way over here.

Check out Brownells, they have a number of different shroud and firing pin products for this.

Brownell's has the shrouds in stainless. While I had the bolt tore down I'd add an aftermarket firing pin and spring. You'd be surprised how much this shortens the already short lock time of a 700.

Heard once that you could lock the bolt without the tool, but not vice versa

I know you can lock the one on the 870 whith out the little tool, but you can't un-lock it!!

careful out there
