Hey Guys,

I'm trying to figure out what kind of iron sights to put on a Mossberg 500 pump, 12 guage to be used for deer hunting. It has a rifled slug barrel, and shots will range from 25 to 100 yards.

A ghost ring really appeals for the close up shots, but I'm not real confident about accuracy out at 100 yards.

What's your favorite set up ???

That rifled barrel should already have sights on it. I have shot the Mossberg and the Remington 870 with normal iron sights and can do well out to about 125 yard. Most of my shots are under 40 yards, but I do get the occasional shot out to and past 100 yards and have no problem. The mossberg is very accurate. The one I shot was able to keep them in 4" at 100 yards with iron sights. The 870 was about 6" with smooth bore rifled slugs.

My 835 turkey gun came with fire sights. These are easy to see with old eyes, but I'm to the point where some kind of optics are almost mandatory if I'm to be fair to the game. Here is how my turkey gun is set up. This should be OK for a slug gun used to a hundred yards. The aimpoint has a two minute dot.

I have a similar question. I have an older (1970's) Remington 1100 16ga with a plain I/C barrel. Is it possible to have a set of iron sights installed on this barrel and can anone recommend a good smithy who does this kind of work ? I live in S. Florida, but I am willing to ship the barrel anywhere.

You can get regular Remington sights that come on their slug barrels installed by a gunsmith. If they do it right, they will silver solder them on. I am not in the right state for you to help you find a gunsmith down there. I am sure someone on here will know of one.

Mossberg sells their ghost ring sights and you can have them installed on your gun. You can also get a set from Williams and XS Systems. I have the sights from Mossberg and they should work fine for up to 100 yards. Krag1899: Try Big Charlie's in Davie.

Ironhead, where is Big Charlie's. I have never heard of it and can't locate it in the book ????

It might be the same price to get a new barrel with the sights in residence as having a great gunsmith do anything. Price out new 16ga sighted barrels at Midway or Brownells. Just a suggestion.

The thing here is, I have never seen a rifled slug barrel without sights already attached unless it had a cantilever scope mount on it. If the scope mount is not on your barrel it should have sights already. Unless someone cut off the scope mount.

Gismo,
If your referring to my barrel, it isn't a rifled barrel. It is a plain Improved Cylinder barrel with a front sight bead. If they make a rifled slug barrel for the 16ga for my Remington 1100, I'd probably just buy that.

I was refering to the original poster, El Lobo. He states he has a rifled slug barrel, but is wanting sights.

Gismo - I completely missed that, you're right, a rifled barrel should have sights in residence, without knowing of an exception.

What I did was buy a smooth bore with the rem-choke system for my 870. I then just either use rifled slugs out of the IC choke or sabots with the rifled 'choke'. I use a B-square mount and a 2.5x Burris shotgun scope. Works great.

Now I have a 20" smooth bore non-rem choke barrel (stock) with rifle sights that will likely just collect dust forever... but oh well!

I prefer a smooth bore with rifled slugs. Will kill a deer just as dead out past 100 yards at a fraction of the cost. On;y problem is, but many smooth bore slug barrels these days. Will have to make my own the next time I need one.

I tried to find a rifled sight and/or a rifled barrel for my 1100 16ga on Midway USA and in Brownell's. Neither one offers a slug barrel in that gauge. I'll call Big Charklies and see what they can do for me and for how much.

I can't say that I have ever seen one for a 16ga. either. May have to make one. Not hard to do. Just find an old 1100 16ga. plain barrel, no rib. Take it to a gunsmith and he can order factory Remington sights that are on their slug barrels and he can mount them. Cut the barrel to whatever length you need and have the smith either sleeve it to a IC or have him thread it for choke tubes and you could use it for turkey also.
