For lower velocity loads for CAS I have been using 7.0 grs of Unique and it leaves my gun a mess. Is this usual for this powder? I'm looking fo velocity around 700fps. Is there a better powder to use out there? Anything cleaner? Any similar velocity loads with my Hornady  45LC 255gr Cowboy bullet?  Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks

Joe- Try Red Dot. About 5 grains. This load works so well it's scary. I believe it's even good on cornflakes.

I've had good luck in both 44mag and 45LC with Clay. 4.3grs. for the 44mag and 5.3grs. for 45LC.
Shoots clean and accurate.

I vote Titegroup or AA#2 Improved (the current stuff).

Other suggestions sound OK also.

I've used AA#2 Imp quite a lot. I would vote for it, though I have never tried Clays or Titegroup. They may do as well or better.
     By the way, dirty burning doesn't necessarily hurt anything. Ever look down the bore of a match .22 rifle? Many smallbore match shooters do not clean their bore all season. And our local team does great in the Idaho state championships most years and usually does well in the Spokane postal matches, which have national competitors. Point is, those bores look DIRTY but shoot great! As long as powder fouling doesn't impair action functioning I don't think I'd worry so much about it.    ID

It occurs to me that with all the good advice you're getting, a $100 worth of 1lb. powder containers, couple hundred bullets/primers and some hours on the range and you'll be all set.....maybe.

But then we wouldn't have it any other way!

I think Unigue and Universal load about the same. I have used Universal at 9.2 gr with a 240 gr. bullet in the 44 mag but I think this is a little hotter than you want. I don't know how it loads back any further. I use 7.9 gr. Green Dot a lot for 44 mag to propell a 240 gr. bullet but this is above 700 too.

I think the Universal is close to grain for grain but Marshall has more experience with this powder.

Definately try Universal Clays. *It burns very clean.  I do want to point out that I don't load anything under 8.0 grs. of U.C.

This morning's range session confirmed Pourboy's recommendation of RedDot in my 44mag..

I've been using 4.0grs. of Bullseye but it sure is dirty, so I tried 5.2grs. of RedDot and the brass was much, much cleaner and it shot every bit as accurately as the Bullseye.

My next step will be a "run-off" between Titegroup, Clay and RedDot, all three of which are pretty clean shooters.
