Hello:

Does anyone have a source for used or new Winchester Model 70 barrels?

I just got bad news from my gunsmith- my 3 year old Model 70 Classic .25-06 is screwed up- I foolishly got a bore snake stuck in it and in the process of removing it put some bad scratches in it (again, very foolish) that have really effected the gun's accuracy.

He had a pile of new and used Model 70 barrels from over the years- he does a lot of custom barrel installation. He seemed to have one in every caliber BUT .25-06, but indicated a lot of gunsmiths do the same thing and have a pile of barrels laying around.

If anyone has a Model 70 Classic .25-06 barrel or knows a source please let me know. I am not interested in aftermarket barrels as this gun means a lot to me as is.

Thanks everyone-

Brent

Welcome to the forum Brent. Depending on where the scratches are there are a couple of things you might try first. Polish out the barrel with JB bore cleaning compound first they try if that doesn't work try firelapping with one of Tubbs kits from Brownell's. Either one of these might make your barrel shootable.

Bob:

Thanks for the welcome, glad to be here.

Its had the JB treatment but has not been firelaped.

I'll continue to try to salvage this barrel, but in the meantime any thoughts on a source of barrels?

Thanks again-

Brent

You could also just have a gunsmith chamber a new barrel to 25-06 or any other caliber for that matter.

Brent,
Unless you are absolutely married to the 25-06 cartridge, this sounds like an excellent candidate for a rebore and rechamber to 280 Rem. You would wind up with a fine caliber and the barrel would still fit in the stock.
