Hi all, I have a 1894fg I would like to cut back to 18-1/2 " and shorten the mag tube in half. Have the front sight re-installed and have a target crown cut. Does any one have any info on a gunsmith who does this...I really prefer the carbine (sc) version on Marlins. Think it balances and points a lot more instinctively.

Thanks, Dbergero

Wow, nobody out there has the name of a good smith to do this sort of work........I would really like to make this rifle a sporting carbine, maybe just cut the mag tube and have a dovetail cut into barrel for the magtube attachment screw eliminating the barrel band. The only reason I was looking into cutting the barrel is because of the groove cut on the bottom of the barrel where the barrel band screw fits. Anyone ever done this ?

It is a very simple job. I would try to find somebody locally so I wouldn't have to ship it.

Alas, I don't know anybody in NH.

This is my 336RC I've been working on but I done the mods myself, shouldn't be too hard to find a machinist or gun smith to do what you want done. The dovetail was cut to attach the mag tube, and dovetail blank drilled and tapped, you might want to have your smith make you a sling swivel screw to attach the mag tube as I have. PS this was also a curved lever gun and I have bought no parts doing the conversion. Above is much of what it looked like before, though not anywhere near as good of shape this my expiermental gun for trying stuff, a pawn shop special that needed a lot of TLC
