I have always heard that the Winchester AA hulls are the best for reloading. However, I have seen some people disagree with this on this board. What is the best hull for reloading.

It depends.I prefer the older Winchester AA and Remington green hulls. I have reloaded the newer Winchester AA cases and did not have the problems that others have reported here. A friend gave me a bunch of Federal Gold Medal empties and they worked just fine. So it depends. All the best...

For 12 guage, I consider the Remington STS hulls the best. I have had problems with the new AAs (even the ones just prior to the change to a 2-piece from the compression formed as they were prone to splitting - which the older ones were not).
For the 20 guage and .410 I still have a good supply of the old AAs - now buying Remington STS in 20 guage for the hulls when I buy new shells and intend to keep the hulls for reloading (bought 2 flats of Super X on sale last week from Bass Pro for $1.99/box, but will discard those hulls after firing). My supply of old style .410 hulls will last for several years so I haven't needed to consider changing hull type there.
I prefer the Federal Gold Medal Hulls in 28 guage as they seem easier to load in my Mec 600 than the Win AA or Rem STS. They do however need about a grain more powder (Universal) than the Win or Rem hulls to get the same velocity in 3/4 oz loads.

I have had very good showing with the Winchester AA's and those Blue Magic hulls in past years.
It also depends on how HOT you load them up!

When the question comes up as which hull is the best for reloading/loading, I have to ask what are you trying to achive? One that can be loaded the most times or which is best for certain loads like waterfowl/turkey/buckshot/slugs?
Straight walled hulls are better for large shot volumes at less chamber pressure.......James
As James said - depends on what you're loading.
For Trap & Upland loads, I like the Remington hulls.
For really heavy stuff, Federal One Piece (not the Gold Medal or paper basewad hulls) or Fiocchi.

As the man said for heavy stuff......don't overlook the Cheddite hulls sold by Graf & Sons. We like Fiocchi hulls by can't use the pre-printed over-run hulls sold by BPI. We tried the green Multi-Metal hull from BPI, but it did not handle roll crimping well. We now use nothing but 3" Cheddites (16mm brass) and they are a tough hull with a consistant primer.....James@Dixie Slugs

For general loads in the 12 guage I uese either the older AA (which I still have 1,000's of) and the STS. Both seem to be about equal as far as life and reloadibility. For the 28 and 410 I have switched to the new AAHS as they really do last longer and I get lots more loads out of them. The STS and old AA load about 3 times and then the crimps either crack, blow off or are just nasty looking. I get empty hulls for free anyways so it is not a major issue to me, if I had to pay for them it might become something I would worry about more.

James, how would I identify the pre printed hulls? I'm useing virgin Fiocchi hulls from BPI in both my 12 (clear hull) and 16 (blue hull)
I'm fairly new to shotgun loading and am leary of going contrary to their advice to not substitute components.
